Single Review By Chris Palmer

I have been friends with Mauricio Chamucero ever since being introduced to him by a mutual friend a couple of years ago at a gig in Camden, London. Despite my busy schedule, I always try to keep up-to-date with his musical exploits and was both thrilled and honoured to be asked to write an article/review of his latest project, The Awareness.

Mauricio Chamucero is an experienced drummer from Colombia, who has played with the excellent Savage Messiah on the 2011 album “Plague Of Conscious”. However, his experience doesn’t end there. His talents have been put to good use by bands such as DragonForce, Blaze Bayley, Rogue Male, and The Bounded, who all required his services as a session drummer.

For this latest project, The Awareness, Mauricio has teamed up with one of the best rock guitarists in South America, Jorge Burbano. Jorge is a guitar teacher for Fernando Sor, which is one of the best music institutes in Colombia. Like Mauricio, Jorge has also worked the scene as the official guitar player for Tim “Ripper” Owens’ (ex-Judas Priest) band in Colombia.

The single/video, “The Awareness”, is a “stripped back” version of one that will appear with a full band on an upcoming EP which should see the light of day in 2017. The video itself was recorded at SOS Studios, Colombia and So Called-Studios, Birmingham, UK. Edited by Ryan Lowry, the video was released in June last year and literally showcases Mauricio’s skills behind the kit as he plays along with Jorge’s shredding guitars.

Having spoken to Mauricio about this new project, this is what he had to say on the matter:

“This is basically an instrumental drumming, shredding project. At the beginning I thought about just doing a drumming video but eventually I thought, it would be a good idea to put it together as a project.

We are thinking about recording an EP, with vocals, hopefully by the end of 2016. But this is very early days to come up with a whole line up. We have some names in mind to work with but, for sure, we will have material by 2017.

So, yeah at the moment this is more like an instrumental single but as I said above, we will be adding vocals once we enter the studio. We’re planning on making a new video in 2017, once we have finished writing and recording the songs.

We both have different projects, in Europe and South America. Jorge and I have known each other for several years now, we’ve been looking for the right time and opportunity to work together and this just feels right, this is what happens when you really enjoy making music.”

If “The Awareness” video is anything to go by, the possibility of additional vocals and bass lines should add extra bite to an already excellent piece of music. I, for one, am really excited at the prospect of a future EP release from Mauricio & Co. Watch this space!
