DRAGONKNIGHT
“Legions”
Album Review by Iron Mathew
10/10

Dragonknight are a power metal band from Finland releasing their debut album ‘Legions’ in 2025…
…featuring eleven songs across fifty minutes of elegance and majesty chock full of thunderous rhythms, epic orchestrations and soaring melodies! If you’re a fan of Blind Guardian, Sabaton and Twilight Force, you’re gonna quickly become a fan of Dragonknight too, the bands debut album a tale of “heart wrenching battles, strong willed warriors and the beauty of glorious death, but also the treasure hunts gone awry, conquest, and the inner power to rise from the hopeless pit of despair yet again in the face of adversity – hear the armies and swords clash, seafaring vessels creak and the wings of the serpents roar”.
So let’s dive straight into ‘Legions’, the album strolling into sight with the two and a half minute scene setting and highly atmospheric instrumental ‘Ascendance – Through Sea And Fire’. The cinematic aura rising high in the air is an all consuming one and will instantly grab the attentions of a worldwide audience, as ‘The Legions Of Immortal Dragonlords’ canters in displaying all the hallmarks of classic sounding European power metal, the band pounding the ground hard with a colossal amount of majesty! Striding tall and proud right through the heart of metal territory, Dragonknight have set their stall out early, hopping genres to include traditional, and heavy/power metal within their soundscape.
And dropping a gear, ‘The Imperator’ rises to the fore with an all conquering anthemic feel, the band changing through the gears to up the pace, power and intensity, all the while remaining firmly in cinematic mode. I can’t stress enough the elegance of the opening brace, Dragonknight standing on the same battlefield as the aforementioned Blind Guardian, Sabaton and Twilight Force in terms of jaw dropping, soaring orchestrations! What a way to announce your arrival into the world metal scene – the band continuing to dazzle and delight as ‘Pirates Bloody Pirates!’ arrives on the crest of a Running Wild style intro, Dragonknight proceeding to slam the hammer down and roar off at high velocity! The fastest song heard so far, ‘Pirates Bloody Pirates!’ remains in the pirate metal arena, a strong sense of partying and enjoyment pouring outta the album right now! And slowing the pace right down to a hymn-like stroll, ‘Defender Of Dragons’ emanates a folk metal feel as the band stroll through a serene landscape for the first minute or so before thundering into life and marching on with a ground shuddering foot stomp – yet incredibly, none of the albums elegance and majesty are lost as Dragonknight display effortless ease in perfectly blending together a multitude of metal styles into one almighty ginormous beautiful beast!
A beautiful beast that turns on its heels to furiously gallop forward at a red hot pace, ‘Storm Bringer’ entering the fray as the fastest song heard up to this point, the band sending every mosh pit around the world into fucking overdrive! The intensity of the album since it began has been spot on, Dragonknight hitting the sweet spot with unwavering accuracy, each and every song on offer reaching the very high standard required to compete with the very best power metal bands around! There’s just no stopping the Finnish metal machine from steam rollering over the entire power metal genre, the band mixing folk with balladry and a majestic hymn-like swagger for the mellow meander that is ‘Astarte Rise’ – every listener everywhere swaying gently from side to side and raising lighters high in the air! The reined in power here is fighting to be set free, but the band hold firm and keep it all in check, letting it flow free for the hustling, bustling ‘Dead Kings In The Grave’, a more menacing feel descending upon the album as menace, elegance and a highly old school flavour merge perfectly with the bands root power metal sound.
Is there no style of metal that Dragonknight can’t turn their hands to? Thrash maybe, but then we’re nowhere near that level of aggression and ferocity, ‘Sword Of The Northern Lights’ resuming the full throttle gallop heard earlier – but with increased levels of thunder and intensity, every building within sonic range of the band crumbling into ruins under the sheer force oozing outta ‘Sword Of The Northern Lights’. And if you thought that was forceful, ‘The Revelation’ pours more fuel onto the fire to maintain the recent phenomenal upsurge in urgency and purpose – the Finnish power metallers keeping the pedal well and truly pressed to the metal. And bringing the album to a show stopping finale, the seven minute long ‘Return To Atlantis’ features every style of metal the band have in their vast arsenal to round off ‘Legions’ to a standing ovation from every listener, fan and follower everywhere, the band deservedly revelling in the adulation.
Overall, a jaw dropping journey of elegant and majestic foot to the floor melodic power metal with an infectious level second to none.
