Exodus Rising are a progressive heavy metal band from the USA formed in 2021, releasing the bands debut album ‘The Book Of Life’ in 2024…
…and what a fucking album it is! A mammoth sixteen songs across a monolithic one hour and forty six minute run time – a simply sensational offering from the New York metallers! Founded by brothers NY Charlie (bass) and KC Bonet (guitar), the bands line-up is completed by Chris Zapa (keyboards), J Slate (vocals), and Willie “Speedy” Gonzalez (drums). Exodus Rising are more than just your regular “run-of-the-mill” progressive metal band, there’s elements of melodic, modern, symphonic and power metal oozing outta the bands soundscape – a soundscape that stands tall and very proud alongside the likes of Stryper, Whitecross and Tourniquet in terms of flying the Christian metal flag.
And in terms of cinematic elegance, the band have taken to the skies in a massive way, maybe even reaching new heights of elegance – majesty too! For every song on offer oozes an elegant and majestic nature second to none – elevating the bands music to a state where every listener’s jaw will drop to the floor with an almighty thud! ‘The Book Of Life’, spans the entire biblical narrative from Genesis to Revelation, with each song beautifully crafted with an immense storytelling feel that captures and captivates every listener, tightly holding attentions from minute one right through to minute one hundred and six! Yes readers, one hundred and fucking six! It’s double album stuff delivered as just one!
So what of the music on offer? Magnificent and moving spring immediately to mind, Exodus Rising immediately hooking listeners right from the off with the bold grandeur of ‘Overture Creation’ – the band delivering their take on the book of Genesis. And from there, ‘The Book Of Life’ defies pigeon holing, Exodus Rising defined as a progressive metal band, but the American outfit are so much more – sweeping symphonic metal, breath taking orchestral arrangements, soaring vocals, and plenty of foot to the floor traditional heavy metal makes this one of the most diverse albums I’ve ever listened to!
And when I say diverse – I mean so varied that it needs your full attention! No, demands your full attention, ’cause with so much on offer it’s gonna be so easy to miss something. And believe me you don’t wanna miss a single second of this masterpiece – no using ‘The Book Of Life’ for driving music either, this album deserves to be listened to in the comfort of your happy place with no distractions, the band effortlessly crossing genre borders to move from their root progressive metal leanings to traditional to symphonic to cinematic metal and everything in-between!
Now as regular readers will already know, my normal writing style is to review every single song on offer, providing details on how each one sounds and makes me feel, but to do this with ‘The Book Of Life’ would take me forever – and we all know long forever is! Plus there’s just so much going on here, the complex arrangements, the sheer number of songs and the amount of minutes – it’s likely I’d use the majority of the six hundred thousand words in the Oxford English Dictionary to complete my review! Just imagine reading all of that! And then imagine me writing all of that!
‘The Book Of Life’ deserves so much more than just pages and pages of words – you need to listen to the album in full to understand and take on board just exactly what Exodus Rising have achieved here. The album is magnificent, glorious and breath taking, fully deserving of its massive 12 out of 10 rating. And it gets my vote as the Album Of The Year – and if I had my way, it’d be played in full at the awards ceremony for everyone to hear. So readers, what are you all waiting for – get up, get out and get your copy of ‘The Book Of Life’ now!
Overall, a sensationally stunning album of magnificent heavy, progressive metal spanning symphonic and cinematic territories too.
