GINGER EVIL
“The Way It Burns”
Album Review by Iron Mathew
9/10

Ginger Evil are a rock band from Finland formed in 2020 releasing their debut album ‘The Way It Burns’ in 2025.
Founded by guitarist Tomi Julkunen and bass player Veli Palevaara, the bands line-up is completed by singer Ella Tepponen and drummer Toni Mustonen – the album a monstrous twelve songs across forty six minutes of rock…heavy, hard, soft and everything in-between! Describing their music as “from Foo Fighters to Fleetwood Mac”, Ginger Evil bring a fresh take on the nineties rock sound, ‘The Way It Burns’ an energetic and lively, up tempo journey that visits every corner of rock territory to please an awfully wide array of fans – ‘Rainmaker’ immediately into its stride to pound the ground hard, the rock roar of singer Tepponen as intoxicating as it is powerful – Ginger Evil launching their debut release with a barnstorming opener! The momentum is maintained threefold with the much heavier hitting ‘Dead On Arrival’, the band assuming a traditional nineties rock swagger as ‘Dead On Arrival’ fully gets going. Yet what makes the Finnish rockers stand out from the crowd is their ability to switch gears and decades to incorporate sounds from a multitude of eras into one seamless rock onslaught – an onslaught that’s only just begun! So strap in, hold on and prepare for more as ‘Shame Old’ bounces into view to hit the ground harder than either of the two songs heard so far, the bands natural flair for lively, up tempo rock songs beginning to shine very brightly!
And into a more melodic realm the band go with ‘Flames’, a more sultry atmosphere descending upon the album as Ginger Evil maintain the incredible attention grabbing nature of every song heard so far – every listener everywhere glued to ‘The Way It Burns’, keen to know where the band are gonna go next! In a more raucous direction that’s where – ‘Hands Move To Midnight’ fuelled by incredible energy and drive, boasting a massive get-the-party-started attitude that’s gonna wake everybody up, regardless of how tired and wasted you are! The intensity of the album since it began has been spot on, keeping everyone’s focus on the Finnish band, Ginger Evil striding into ballad territory with ‘Arrowhead’, the band inviting every listener to raise lighters high and sway gently from side to side – ‘Arrowhead’ swinging in and out of power balladry across its two hundred and sixty one second run time! Every song on offer clocks in at between three and a half and four and a half minutes in length, paving the way for a quick moving no-time-for-a-breather journey of unstoppable rock, ‘Better Get In Line’ stirring a massive Southern swagger into the bands soundscape, Ginger Evil punching hard here and kicking even harder as the ground shudders beneath the bands feet!
And still with no respite from the all conquering intensity of the album, ‘The Way It Burns’ marches on with a majestic stomp courtesy of ‘Black Waves’, the band striding tall and very pound right through the heart of hard rock territory to plant smiles a mile wide on the faces of every rock fan everywhere – and when I say “a mile wide” I mean all the way from ear to ear! And switching back to sultry mode, ‘Whispers’ is a Sunday morning stroll through a field on a warm summers day with just a hint of a breeze blowing through your hair, the seductive vocals of Tepponen leaving you in a dreamy state of tingling fuzziness – ‘Not Your Fool’ returning the bands dynamic, and immensely lively root rock sound to the fore. The up tempo, party anthem feel here is stunning, ‘Not Your Fool’ stretching the mile wide smiles even further, ‘Last Frontier’ the most up tempo song on offer! Up tempo yes, but also featuring a bombastic foot stomp that’s gonna shatter the ground beneath the bands feet, not to mention send shockwaves all around the world! And bringing the rollercoaster of rock to an end, ‘Wake Me’ is another majestic melodic rocker that sees the band striding tall with shoulders back and head held high to round off a very good debut album.
Overall, a hard rocking, heavy hitting album of diverse rock, ‘The Way It Burns’ is gonna appeal to a very wide array of rock fans.
