HELLCATS
“Black Thunder”
Single Review by Iron Mathew
9/10
Hellcats are a heavy metal band from Slovenia formed in 2003 by sisters (bass player) Sasha and (drummer) Sonja Zagorc – the bands debut album ‘Divja pot’ emerging in 2013. And the following year, an English version was released, ‘Warrior Princess’. Over the years, Hellcats have toured across Europe, and in October 2023 the band presented their new single ‘Black Thunder’ to a packed 100 Club on Oxford Street in London (UK).
Written by the founding Zagorc sisters and recorded with well known Slovenian producer Dejan Radicevic, the new single also features two new band members – guitarist Mia Marinic and lead singer Sara Simeunovic.
Now I don’t know much about Slovenia – according to a brief internet search, the country is known worldwide for its “gorgeous snow capped mountains, emerald green lakes, intricate cave systems and winding rivers”. And a female four piece full of energy and an unstoppable desire to deliver attractive, highly infectious heavy metal!
‘Black Thunder’ is a melodic march of traditional metal, very much in the vein of old school masters Iron Maiden, Hellcats planting their collective feet on the monitors, ‘Black Thunder’ galloping forth with pace, power and head bang ability.
The band formed in 2003, releasing their debut album in 2013, and new single in 2023 – I just hope to God we don’t have to endure another ten year wait for new Hellcats material!
Overall, a barnstorming gallop of traditional heavy metal, ‘Black Thunder’ is full of drive and energy, highly head bang-able and overly infectious.
