IDOL THRONE
“The Sibylline Age”
Album Review by Iron Mathew
9/10
Idol Throne are a power/thrash metal band from the USA formed in 2018 releasing their debut album ‘The Sibylline Age’ in 2022…
…featuring ten songs across a one hour run time! The bands sound is rooted in the power come melodic thrash metal genre, with added touches of the progressive style of metal. The band breath life into their debut with the one minute effects laden instrumental ‘A Tale Untold’, setting a highly anticipation fuelled atmosphere for the album opener proper – the fast paced ‘Unholy Warrior’. Travelling at high speed, ‘Unholy Warrior’ stands proud on the border of thrash and traditional heavy metal, pounding the senses with a heaviness that belies the bands power metal tag. A hugely addictive opening salvo, the band storm on with the faster paced and more fiery ‘The Labyrinth’ – and a guitar chugging rhythm that is infectious and will have mosh pits enthusiastically coming alive. In fact, ‘The Labyrinth’ reminds me a little of early Helloween, you know, the era before Michael Kiske when they were more heavy metal than power metal!
The intensity and pace of the album is maintained with the galloping ‘Sacred Fire’ – a blistering melodic thrash metal rampage that bands such as Annihilator and Flotsam And Jetsam would be proud of. The infectious level that Idol Throne have entered in on, is incredibly high, and is gonna attract fans from a number of genres – namely thrash, power, and the all consuming traditional heavy metal. The band have kept their foot firmly on the pedal since the album began, and are in no hurry to lift it – ‘White Wolf’ continuing the aural avalanche of head bang-able heavy metal. And with a more power metal feel than anything heard so far, the band shift their sound from genre to genre with absolute ease. Picking up the pace to a ferocious gallop, ‘Last Full Measure’ is a high velocity romp, with plenty to keep the head bangers of the world happy…less so the singers! For ‘Last Full Measure’ is an instrumental, clocking in at almost eight minutes in length.
Idol Throne are making an impressive impact with their debut, targeting fans of bands such as Helloween, Testament, and Iron Maiden – yes their sound is that diverse! And with no break for a breather, the band move swiftly on with the more sinister sounding ‘Crown Of Fools’. A much harder hitting romp than what has gone before, ‘Crown Of Fools’ is a power driven slab of heavy metal – Idol Throne unearthing a menace and venom that hasn’t been present so far. The opening riff to ‘Raven’s Blade’ echoes the legendary sound of the NWOBHM evolution, and the galloping “foot on the monitor” style of metal. However, as ‘Raven’s Blade’ progresses, it changes down a gear, adopting a heavy foot stomp, only for numerous gear changes to occur before the song comes to a thundering end.
The phenomenal intensity of the album remains unbroken as Idol Throne motor on with ‘Power And Control’, a fast paced and highly thunderous romp. And with only one song left to go, the band have shown their prowess at melding together three of the greatest styles of metal – traditional, power, and thrash, to create a heavy hitting album that’s gonna appeal to a very wide array of fans. So, the final song, the eleven and a half minute title song ‘The Sibylline Age’ – an epic in all senses of the word! From its mellow beginnings to its traditional metal gallop, to its bold majestic swagger, ‘The Sibylline Age’ (the song) is a journey not to be missed.
Overall, a thundering album of all out heavy metal, combining thrash, power, and traditional metal elements to great effect.
