LORDI
“Limited Deadition”
Album Review by Iron Mathew

10/10

Lordi are a heavy metal & hard rock band from Finland formed in 1992, releasing nineteen albums over a thirty year plus career – the bands penchant for clever, playful play-on-word song titles rife throughout ‘Limited Deadition’, Lordi’s most recent release emerging in 2025…

…featuring a theme surrounding the bands founder Mr. Lordi’s fascination with collectible toys from the eighties, “the album topic of eighties toys is actually just a loose theme, but it’s been with me since I was little. I’ve always been a collector of various things, and I’m some kind of a hoarder. I can’t even remember what my first toy was, but my obsession basically started with Muppet Show dolls, followed by Star Wars and E.T. figures” comments the bands frontman.

Founded in Lapland over three decades ago by singer, songwriter and designer Mr. Lordi, Lordi are one of the major Finnish rock and metal acts of our time, the band achieving their international breakthrough with a spectacular win at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest – a win that introduced the bands colourful, horror-infused songwriting to a global audience via the incredible hit song ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’. Since then, the unconventional troops have rocked their way into the spotlight of Europe with charm, unforgettable tunes and elaborate monster costumes, and have become an integral part of the line-ups of globally recognised festivals such as Wacken Open Air (DE) and Masters Of Rock (CZ).

2024 has been a phenomenal year for the band, taking on an unexpected role as vegan handbag models for Vogue Scandinavia, highlighting their animal-friendly ethos and sparking widespread media attention, also collaborating with OnePlus to create the track ‘Made Of Metal’ for the company’s new device, blending their musical prowess with cutting-edge technology. And amid a relentless touring schedule that included performances alongside Babymetal and Sabaton, Lordi managed to create ‘Limited Deadition’, an album that continues the bands exploration of AOR-inspired music with a sharper, more metallic edge.

Opening with one of Lordi’s signature ‘SCG’ chapters, the album features songs like ‘Legends Are Made Of Clichés’ and the lead single ‘Syntax Error’ which merges catchy melodies with cinematic overtones. The song ‘Skelephant In The Room’ follows with an irresistible chorus, while ‘SCGTV Saturday Night Main Event’ offers a nostalgic nod to eighties pop culture, complete with a creatively designed booklet. The ballad ‘Collectable’ stands out for its emotional depth, drawing comparisons to Pink Floyd’s ‘The Greatest Gig In The Sky’.

The second half of the album picks up the pace with high energy songs like ‘Fangoria’, ‘Hellizabeth’ and ‘Retropolis’ – all guaranteed to energise fans! The title song ‘Limited Deadition’ explores the struggles of collectors in a digital age, serving as a bold statement of dediction to tangible, meaningful objects. The closing song ‘You Might Be Deceased’ ends the album on an intriguing and introspective note. Far from being the conclusion of Lordi’s journey, ‘Limited Deadition’ is a vibrant and exciting new chapter – the band due to commence their European tour later this month – including six dates in the UK, Mr. Lordi teasing fans to expect nothing less than monsters delivering melodic metal and rock at its finest.

And who am I to disagree, “melodic metal and rock at its finest” is probably one of the best – and maybe shortest summations of the bands nineteenth album ‘Limited Deadition’, offering every listener, fan and follower forty six marvellous minutes of infectious, jaw dropping music.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable album of mesmerising entertainment from start to finish, ‘Limited Deadition’ is one of the years must listen to releases.
