NIGHT DEMON Album Review: “Outsider”

NIGHT DEMON
“Outsider”
Album Review by Iron Mathew

9/10

Night Demon are a heavy metal band from the USA formed in 2011, releasing their self titled debut E.P. the following year. The bands first full length album ‘Curse Of The Damned’, was released in 2015 with sophomore album ‘Darkness Remains’, a 2017 release. In 2022, the compilation album ‘Year Of The Demon’ was released, followed in 2023 by the bands third (studio) album ‘Outsider’…

…featuring eight songs that take the listener on a raucous roller coaster of emotions and highs and lows! ‘Outsider’ is more varied than the bands two previous albums, Night Demon pushing their musical boundaries further than ever before to bring progressive elements and sombre moments to their root traditional metal sound. So prepare yourselves for a journey of exploration as the three piece – Jarvis Leatherby (vocals/bass), Armand John Anthony (guitar), and Dusty Squires (drums) – get underway with the two minute, crescendo building intro ‘Prelude’, hurtling head long into the fast and furious title song ‘Outsider’. And what a song! Fireworks and incendiary devices all going off together, ‘Outsider’ (the song) is a bombastic barnstormer, speeding forth with the pedal firmly pressed to the metal! The band are in top gear as ‘Outsider’ (the song) roars forth with venom and intent!

An absolutely barnstorming start, the band romp on with the hard rocking ‘Obsidian’, and a glorious old school feel! The iconic gallop of traditional heavy metal comes to the fore as ‘Obsidian’ thunders on with immense head bang ability, and total sing a long ability across the chorus break. Night Demon have opened in fantastic style, hooking the listener with an incredibly infectious opening one-two! And with a dramatic shift in tempo and feel, the album turns sombre with the doom heavy ‘Beyond The Grave’, and a slow wander of dark and moody vibes. Balladry and hymn-like tendencies mix with the heavy thunder of doom to great effect, ‘Beyond The Grave’ a bold head held high stroll.

Picking the pace and tempo back up, the band storm on with ‘Rebirth’, and the classic sound of traditional heavy metal – Night Demon unashamedly displaying their musical influences! ‘Rebirth’ has a cracking sing a long style chorus and will surely, and quickly, become a fan favourite. Hitting the bombastic button very hard, the band hurtle on with the high speed ‘Escape From Beyond’ – and a head bang ability level that’s just crashed through the fucking roof! Prowling forth with as much oomph as album opener ‘Outsider’, Night Demon are masters of traditional heavy metal…

…and most definitely aren’t afraid to show it! Although for ‘A Wake’, the band return the sombre mood of earlier – albeit less the doom metal feel. ‘A Wake’ parades a brighter, more uplifting feel as it progresses, becoming louder and more brash, hitting very hard and likely to knock listeners off their feet! Bringing the album to a close is the seven and a half minute ‘The Wrath’ – an epic in all senses of the word! The band open mellow and serene, build to a crescendo, and then foot stomp heavily – ‘The Wrath’ a barnstorming mid paced tension fuelled swagger. And did I say mid paced! The change of pace mid song is emphatic, the band pressing down hard on the accelerator. And what’s that? Another song! Yep – ‘The Last Day’ a bonus offering. And what a bonus! Two and a half minutes of blistering pace with an immense amount of head bang ability. Thank you and good night!

Overall, an infectious romp of old school metal with plenty on offer to please older and younger fans.
