OUTSHINE Album Review: “The Awakening”

OUTSHINE
“The Awakening”
Album Review by Piers Renfree

8/10

Outshine are a Goth rock/grunge band who hail from Gothenburg in Sweden. They were founded in 1996 by guitarist Jimmy Boman, who is also currently the band’s vocalist. The band started out as more of a studio project, until 2002, when they started doing live shows as well.

The band’s debut album “Bad Things Always End Bad” arrived in 2007 and two years later “Until We Are Dead” followed. “Prelude To Descent” was released in 2013 and now, here we have the band’s fourth album “The Awakening”. Outshine currently also consists of Niklas Ingvarsson (bass) and he, with Jimmy Boman, are joined by session musicians for their live shows.

The eight songs here go on for just over forty minutes and the epic, seven minute “It’s All Lies” opens proceedings. The musicianship here is fantastic and the song crafting is top notch. Sadly though, Outshine come across as a lighter Paradise Lost and you can’t help but feel that the band could be and deserve to be more than that. Probably having a full-time band that tour and record together might be the answer here.
