SEVERED ANGEL
“When Eternity Ends”
Album Review by Iron Mathew
10/10

Severed Angel are a melodic metal band from the USA formed in 2022, releasing three albums to date – ‘Severed Angel’ (2023), ‘Skyward’ (2024), and ‘When Eternity Ends’…
…emerging just ten months after the bands sophomore album! And less than two years after their debut! Talk about prolific, Severed Angel delivering three albums in just twenty two months, each one progressing the bands sound further and further – ‘When Eternity Ends’ consisting of ten new songs across forty four wide ranging minutes that roam all over metal territory. The one minute ‘The Fall Of Rain’ features guest vocalist Gail Bourque (Shadow Circus) – who also provided guest vocals on the first two Severed Angel albums, sets an eerie, spine tingling atmosphere as it builds to an unbearable level of tension…
…’When Eternity Ends’ striding headlong into (album opener proper) ‘Through The Eyes Of Time’ – the sound of melodic heavy metal filling the air like smoke from a burning fire! The band are majestic too, marching tall and proud across metal territory with shoulders back and head held high, every fan and follower looking up at Severed Angel with stunned looks on their faces – faces that are still boasting ear to ear wide grins from the bands previous albums! A head turning start, the band keep a tight hold of listener’s attentions with the bolder, mid tempo thunder stomper ‘Cry Out To The World’ – for all of the first thirty seconds or so, the band hitting the accelerator hard to roar off at full throttle, Severed Angel changing through the gears ala progressive metal as ‘Cry Out To The World’ gets fully into its stride. An opening brace from different areas of the heavy metal genre, ‘When Eternity Ends’ explodes furiously into life with the aggression fuelled romper ‘Shed’, the level of head bang ability taking a sharp upwards trajectory as everyone around the world rocks their head back and forth in rhythmic unison with the band.
The intensity of the album has been all conquering since it began, Severed Angel keeping it very much intact with the thundering ‘Like Lightning’, the pace and power pouring outta ‘Like Lightning’ exactly what you’d expect to hear from a heavy/power metal band, the American five piece effortlessly switching genres with consummate ease – the bands fanbase growing ever larger. Well it ain’t gonna get any smaller is it, Severed Angel one of the most productive bands around at the moment, keeping a consistent presence in the eyes and ears of all eight billion people on the planet over the last two very prolific years! There’s just no stopping the band right now, the New York metal machine rolling on with the immensely melodic metaller ‘Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing’ – and one of the most sing a long-able choruses heard so far! I tell ya readers, the infectious level of ‘When Eternity Ends’ is sky fucking high, and only getting higher, the band adopting a meaner, more sinister aura as ‘The Demon’s Alive’ gets underway. And what the hell! Growling harsh vocals! I certainly didn’t read about those in the press release, so I’m not sure who sings them – the bands singer or a guest vocalist! Either way, the terrifying edge the harsh vocals give ‘The Demon’s Alive’ fits in perfectly with the theme of the song, Severed Angel adding a little theatrical artistry to the bands ever growing arsenal of musical styles.
The album has been a mesmerising journey through various metal landscapes, the band keeping every listener on their toes guessing as to which direction ‘When Eternity Ends’ is gonna turn in next – ‘In My Skin’ shuddering the ground with a lively and upbeat tempo yet remaining heavy and moody as walls wobble and buildings shake under the immense force oozing outta ‘In My Skin’. I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing every album the band has released so far, and have seen and heard the band grow in stature over the years. Years – it’s only been two! But what a two years it’s been – Severed Angel pressing the pedal firmly to the metal to cruise along the freeway at top speed with ‘One Life To Live’ – the pace, power and energy levels all rocketing straight through the roof! ‘When Eternity Ends’ comes to an end with the title song ‘When Eternity Ends’ – the high level of majesty heard earlier making a return as the band adopt a mighty mid tempo pace that blends a hymn-like swagger with power balladry to create a sizzling atmosphere of spine tingling proportions.
Overall, a magnificent melodic metal march featuring a sky high infectious level with inspiration from every corner of the heavy metal genre.
