SINNER RAGE Album Review: “Powerstrike”

SINNER RAGE
“Powerstrike”
Album Review by Iron Mathew

10/10

Sinner Rage are a heavy metal band from Spain, releasing a two song demo in 2024, and the bands debut album ‘Powerstrike’ in 2025…

…featuring one of the oldest old school heavy metal sounds I think I’ve ever heard! Is it really 2025 and not 1985! Has it really been forty years since Iron Maiden’s ground breaking live opus ‘Live After Death’! Lemme just check a calendar…yes it is and yes it has! But for the Spanish metal band Sinner Rage, years mean nothing when it comes to pure eighties nostalgia, the bands debut release as much at home today as it would have been four decades ago – ‘Powerstrike’ an unapologetic head nod to the glorious eighties and the iconic NWOBHM, the albums title song setting ‘Powerstrike’ on its way. And if you close your eyes here, you can just about smell the eighties, Sinner Rage hitting the ground running with a tonne of get and go – the chorus break sing a long-able to the fucking max, “This is a power strike, In the heat of the night, This is a power strike, In the name of pride”. A sensational album opener, the band roar on with the mouth watering ‘Silent Thunder’, and a guitar tone that’s gonna make every NWOBHM loving listener go weak at the knees! The old school metal sound is spot on here, Sinner Rage doing a fantastic job of sounding like they’re from the eighties when in actual fact I highly doubt any of the band were even born back then!

An opening brace to warm the hearts of every metalhead on the planet, ‘Powerstrike’ (the album) strides on with the more mid paced ‘Highway Knights’, the band building a crescendo of irresistible riffage for the first minute or so, launching headlong into an upbeat bouncy realm where everyone’s feet are tapping and heads nodding in perfect harmony to ‘Highway Knights’. The Spanish five piece have been on fire since the album began, ‘Chained By Night’ simmering a little bit as a mighty melodic metal march appears and shudders the ground with immense force – the intensity keeping every listener hooked to the album, simply getting stronger and stronger! And to be honest, it doesn’t have to be that strong ’cause the heavy metal on show is so alluring that everyone is gonna be instantly grabbed by the album’s overpowering nature! The fire rages on as ‘Fire’s On’ enters the fray brimming with power and pace, Sinner Rage pressing the pedal firmly to the metal to encourage every listener, fan, follower, metaller and mosher around the world to head bang like a fucking lunatic! It’s the least ‘Fire’s On’ deserves.

The unrelenting metal machine from Spain trundles on with ‘Angel Of Combustion’, actually increasing the pace from the previous song, the band hurtling right through the heart of metal territory to deliver the most infectious, head bang-able song heard so far! Now don’t get me wrong, every song has been infectious and head bang-able, it’s just ‘Angel Of Combustion’ has that little bit extra – the x-factor if you will! And without breaking stride, ‘Call Of The Wind’ breezes in with all guns blazing, battering listeners with, it has to be said again, a fucking glorious old school metal sound! I was around in the eighties and know exactly what the old school metal sound is, listening to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, et al redefine and shape heavy metal into the magnificent beast it is today – and Sinner Rage would have fitted in perfectly back then! A very good album soon comes to a finish – but as regular readers already know, I often say “the replay button was invented for albums just like this”. But before you go and press that button, there’s the matter of the final song, ‘Dangerous Attraction’. And what a song, everything oozing outta ‘Dangerous Attraction’ has an eighties metal and rock feel stamped all over it, Sinner Rage ending their debut album very much on a high!

Overall, a glorious gallop of traditional heavy metal with a huge old school feel, a sky high infectious level, and a tonne of head bang ability.
