WAILING BANSHEE
“Fight To Be Free”
E.P. Review by Iron Mathew
10/10
Wailing Banshee are a heavy metal band from the UK formed in 2019, releasing their debut E.P. ‘Fight To Be Free’ in 2024.
With thunderous drums and screaming guitars, British metallers Wailing Banshee combine an old school sound with youthful energy and fierce female vocals – the bands line-up featuring singer Dani Bentham, bass player Richie Parkhouse, drummer Charlie Morris, and guitarists Ali McKenzie and Harry Darbyshire. The five-piece outfit from Manchester are on fucking fire, fighting to be free across fifteen fairly ferocious minutes and four songs! And when you think back to heavy metals early days during the eighties when bands such as Angel Witch, Girlschool, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rock Goddess and Saxon were laying the foundations for heavy metal – Wailing Banshee wholeheartedly build upon that!
And what a start to the E.P. the band make too – ‘Hidden Chapters’ marching into sight all tall and proud, echoing the power driven mid tempo stomp of ‘Priest, alongside the anthemic thunder of Manowar! I tell ya readers, Wailing Banshee have announced their arrival on the metal scene with an almighty bang – a bang that doesn’t just stop at song number one! Hell no – there’s three more bangs to come, the first of which is the faster paced ‘Hit The Ground’. The band are at full tilt here, planting their collective feet on the old school heavy metal monitor to emanate the glorious sound of eighties heavy metal. Time to work those neck muscles and furiously head bang to ‘Hit The Ground’ – it’s the least it deserves!
An absolute barnstormer of an opening double, the closing double is even better, the title song ‘Fight To Be Free’ maintaining the electric pizzazz of ‘Hit The Ground’ – albeit with a heavier feel and a much weightier melodic punch! The E.P. started good, and has progressed to great in a firestorm of red hot heavy metal, the band ending ‘Fight To Be Free’ E.P. with the most thunderous song on offer, ‘To Save The World’ keeping the pedal firmly pressed to the metal. A blistering four song barrage from the Manchester metal band, their debut release has been nothing short of sensational – I am drooling in anticipation of more from Wailing Banshee.
Overall, fifteen minutes of fiery heavy metal from a young band making their first foray onto the world stage.
