Black Dahlia Murder @ Rescue Rooms, Nottingham 17/1/16
Review By Jakk Perkins
So, tonight The Black Dahlia Murder grace our fair city for a night of frivolity and fucking death metal!
Admittedly my first and only other experience of BDM live was at Bloodstock Open Air 2012, which I found a little underwhelming but for me it’s just difference in atmosphere between middle of the day at and open air festival and a venue, at night with a head ripping sound system. I am however reviewing the latter. 2 bands have been and gone. With the previous band Beknighted doing a great job of getting a bit of movement amongst the bodies that turned out for this show of American Badassery (if that isn’t a word it bloody is now).
The lights change and there’s a shift in the mood as the band take to the stage opening with the string quartet intro of ‘Reciept’ and Boom! The hair is flailing, the fists are pumping and pits are writhing. It’s clear to see there’s some devoted fans in the crowd. My personal recipe for a great set opener is a sharp and heavy pair of songs make sure people know your here and you mean business and BDM do just that heading into ‘What a horrible night for a curse’ As I gaze on in awe from the balcony my jaw firmly on the floor below. I thought, where will they go from here? Front man Trevor jokes “ok we’re going to play you a slow one now” and then slammed into ‘On stirring seas of salted blood’. Slow one my eye!
These guys are on form and I’m loving every second of it. So much so I decided I wanted a peice of that pit and bimbled my way downstairs and towards the fray. Cider in hand I pondered “Is this a good idea? I haven’t been in a pit like this since Soulfly many years back” fuck it why not! For the next half hour or so I am lost in a whirlwind of high energy, brutal sound. The guys are throwing out a grand and varied mix from all of their back catalogue and they’re having a blast doing it. Trevor calls out for the “circle pit from hell” and we gladly oblige. Seriousness aside Trevor defintaly cracks me up with his constant cheesy grin, fist pumping and arm waves. He often throughout the night points out individuals in crowd and gives them *the nod* or throws up the fists . This solidifies that there is no us and them, it’s every single person in this room, band and fan alike being a part of something bigger. They close the night with the anthemic ‘I will return’ and I sure as hell hope that was a promise because I haven’t felt that pumped up after a gig in a very long time.
BDM you guys nailed it! And to close some wise words from their guitarist Brian Eschbach “Don’t get high on your own farts”
