LionSoul Album Review: “Welcome Storm”

LIONSOUL
WELCOME STORM”
Album Review By Iron Mathew

9/10

LionSoul are a power metal band from Italy, formed in 2009, releasing their debut album ‘Omega’ in 2013. The five song, digitally released E.P. ‘The Throne’ was distributed through the bands website in 2015. ‘Welcome Storm’ is the bands second album and was released in 2017.

Breathing life into the new album, ‘Beyond Dusk’ sets an atmospheric and highly charged feel, as the album launches proper with the hard rocking, guitar buzzing and foot stompingly heavy ‘The Principal Warrior’. Picking up pace through the chorus break, ‘The Principal Warrior’ is an infectious slab of melodic power metal. Propelling the album on at pace, ‘Next Genesis’ is a thunderous and quick power metal gem. Head banging can start for real now… ‘Next Genesis’ is everything power metal is famed for, pace, power, clean vocals and a catchiness that is second to none. Hard hitting with a huge injection of the melodic, ‘Gatling Sight’ swaggers into view and strolls off, head held high and proud.

With ten songs on offer across forty six minutes, the album is of average length and content…But that is the only thing average about the album. ‘Welcome Storm’ is an album that just gets better and better as it powers on. ‘Bright As Light’ begins life as a thunderous mid tempo stomp of heavy rhythms, soon becoming a rampant rage of savagery as the pace quickens to become a blistering speed metal song. Add in a sparkling guitar solo that is just superb and ‘Bright As Light’ becomes a highlight of the album. The foot stomping anthemic style of power metal, as made famous by American legends Manowar, makes its presence felt as ‘Iron Whispers’ foot stomps into sight and is a magnificent stroll of heaviness. The buzzing guitar sound is a dream to listen to, especially for those fans of the NWOBHM sound. With a song titled ‘The Thunder Master’, you would expect a storm of savagery…and you won’t be disappointed. Displaying a hint of British icons Judas Priest, ‘The Thunder Master’ is the fastest song on the album and flies by in a flurry of rampant riffs and galloping rhythms.

Pace, power and heaviness is turned up to maximum as ‘A Common Forever’ thunders on like a freight train rolling by…unstoppable and very heavy. ‘A Common Forever’ is catchy and infectious with a clean and clear vocal performance and can be classified as the signature sound of LionSoul. With a touch of the epic and glory styles of heavy metal ‘Welcome Storm (Eternal Quest)’ is the best song on offer here. Highly energetic with an off the scale intensity level, ‘Welcome Storm (Eternal Quest)’ is as near perfect a power metal song that you could ever hope for. The blistering pace is outstanding, with blazing guitars, galloping rhythms and a top notch clean and clear vocal delivery. As the album has progressed, it has got heavier and faster, with the final song keeping that trend alive. ‘Lion’s Throne’ is up tempo hustle and bustle with a head bangingly addictive sound. This album was a little slow to get up and go, but when it did, boy what a journey.

Overall, pace, power and passion all combine to deliver a sparkling storm of top drawer power metal that definitely sits at the heavier end of the genre.
