Random Eyes Album Review: “Grieve No More”

RANDOM EYES
“GRIEVE NO MORE”
Album Review By Iron Mathew

8/10

Random Eyes are a heavy metal band from Finland, formed in 2001 by singer/songwriter Christian Palin (Panorama, ex Adagio), releasing their debut album ‘Eyes Ablaze’ in 2003. The follow up, ‘Invisible’ was released in 2008, with the band releasing a third album ‘Light Up’ in 2011. ‘Grieve No More’ is the bands fourth full length album and was released in 2018.

‘Trail Of Tears’ is a one and a half minute instrumental that gently leads to the opening song, the riff heavy ‘Myopathy’. Foot stomping its way into view, guitars buzzing relentlessly, ‘Myopathy’ hits hard with a mix of vocal styles. The driving force behind Random Eyes is founder Christian Palin, the only stable member of the band. Christian has assembled guest/session musicians for each album, which gives each release a slightly different sound, although the basis of the Random Eyes sound is heavy power metal. The title song ‘Grieve No More’ picks up speed and sets a blistering pace as it steams along, furious and urgent, with an addictive head banging rhythm. ‘Fate Loves The Fearless’ is catchy European style power metal. Big riffing with a huge sing a long style, anthemic chorus, ‘Fate Loves The Fearless’ is an infectious romp.

Bringing the pace and tone of the album down a few notches, ‘2 Worlds Collide’ plants one foot in the power ballad genre, keeping the other foot firmly planted in the hard rock genre. The chorus for ‘2 Worlds Collide’ is catchy and touches on AOR as it glides effortlessly by. ‘Damnation’ brings a touch of the heavy to the album and is a little more aggressive than anything else heard so far. Assuming a pace akin to the American hard rock genre, ‘Damnation’ is blunt and boisterous.

Ten songs across forty minutes is average numbers for an album release, but what you do get is a meandering journey through various genres such as heavy metal, hard rock and power metal, touching on ballads and AOR too. ‘Do What Thou Wilt’ demands for lighters to be held high as it swaggers on by, more mellow than anything that has gone before. Tempo and energy levels go through the roof as ‘Never Too Late’ bustles in and romps on in the vein of the classic European power metal sound. Add a catchy sing a long style chorus and ‘Never Too Late’ is one of the highlights on the album. Mid tempo and hard hitting, ‘Scar’ stabs viciously as it slices its way through the airways. What Random Eyes seem very good at, is catchy and sing a long style choruses, so infectious that smiling and singing along happens without you even realising. The album is brought to a close with the classic sound of European power metal. ‘The Final Quest’ is infectious, foot tappingly addictive and a memorable end to a good album.

Overall, hard hitting European style power metal collides with the classic heavy metal sound, delivering an album of infectious and catchy heavy rock.
