Falling Red Album Review: “Lost Souls”

FALLING RED
“LOST SOULS”
Album review by Stacey Fawcett

9/10

Hailing from Cumbria are “Falling Red” who refer to their music as “post-sleaze”, they have an array of offerings musically such as country rock and ‘peasant’ metal.

Opening with a short snippet of what is to come is “The Darkest Day” a 50 second story introduction before “The Day I Lost My Soul” comes crashing in with its catchy riffs, powerful vocals and punchy drums. It also has quite a typical metal ‘whoah’ singalong section which people will either love or hate, as from experience people either like to be prompted on their ‘whoahs’ or they don’t.

“Digital Disguise” comes in heavily with the double bass thumping away and distorted guitars crunching alongside them. The vocals are proving to be consistently solid so far, but what really stands out in this track is phenomenal lead guitar work, the solo, the pinch harmonics. Just amazing.

“Alive” starts slightly lighter but has a nice pace, a slow driving force being provided by the vocals. It’s nice to hear a singer believing what he sings, it’s genuine and has feel to it. It’s something we can all relate to us as well as we have all likely met people who seem ‘dead behind the eyes’.

“My Town My City” opens with an acoustic guitar which is mixed with strange panning… I’m not too sure what this adds. The mellow track fits well as it’s stripped back and really shows the musical prowess of the band. It could easily be from a Guns N Roses album. “Dead”, wow the dynamic this short track has is incredible. In contrast to “My Town My City” it couldn’t be more different but it certainly gets your attention. Then follows “Hell In My Eyes” with its chunky, nasty (the good nasty) bass line thumping through, then you have the lid off the jar moment with an huge sounding chorus. Then, that bass line is back followed by very headbangable Slayer-esque guitar chugs. This song is so much fun!

“War In The Sky” I’m a sucker for phenomenal catchy drum work which has lots of different variations, so this track for me is the favourite. It’s very drum heavy but it’s magical, the band are brilliant with keeping an album incredibly dynamic. Followed by “Enemies” which has more attitude than a stroppy teenager. Now we have another acoustic lead track “Beautiful Lie” which accompanied with beautiful vocals is such a gentle, heart on the sleeve style track. Then boom the epic ending strikes, cue the wind machine and Slash walking out of a church.

“Haunted” has the anthemic singalong feel, how the band manage to keep the energy up I have no idea as you can hear they put their all into each individual tracks and there’s still two more tracks on what is a brilliant album. “In My Head” is very mysterious, with well executed guitar layering then we end with “A Song For The Haters” a really f*ck you track. Love it!

There’s nothing much more I can say about this album apart from that everyone should buy it. It’s great to hear young metal band showing that they have the same calibre as the older bands.
