THREE DAYS GRACE
“OUTSIDER”
Album review by Stacey Fawcett
6/10
Three Days Grace are a multi-platinum certified band from Canada, they are incredibly popular and have taken a new approach whilst writing this album. It was written in a garage behind the bassist’s house, the band did this to feel free and to step out of the madness of the world currently. Being an Outsider is a feeling that most young adults and teenagers have had, but writing a whole album about this could be interesting.
“Right Left Wrong” starting with a whispery intro that seeps in, intriguing you, enticing you before – boom. Anthemic sounding vocals and a wall of guitars slam into you, the chorus is next level. What a great start to an album! It’s always a relief when the first track is as good as this is. “The Mountain” has an opening riff which is extremely edgy, this album is heavy. The concept of the track is beautiful which I’m sure fans will appreciate, as everybody has their own mountain to climb. “I Am An Outsider” similarly to “The Mountain” portrays a united concept which is relatable and has a strong driving force throughout the track delivered by the solid drumming.
“Infra-Red” keeps the heavy feel to the album however I feel the keys are masked as are some of the harmonies, this would really lift the track. “Nothing To Lose But You” Opens with an acoustic guitar which is played effortlessly, and slowly builds adding an instrument at a time which works very well. I love a slightly stripped back track on and album as that’s where you really hear the band and not the studio. “Me Against You” tries to be ‘huge’ but doesn’t quite get there, it doesn’t really add anything to the album. “Love Me Or Leave Me” the album has sadly began to dip after what was a promising opening, it feels like this is another filler track which isn’t required.
“Strange Days” this track is better; I’m hoping this picks the album up. “Villain I’m Not” proves me wrong, I’m confused with how the album has dipped, there is no dynamic at all. The last three tracks
“Chasing The First Time”, “The New Real” and “The Abyss also show this, it’s a shame.
I think the main problem with the album is that it feels forced and overproduced, it’s all quite samey. Which is annoying as the album opened well, you could remove half of the tracks which would have made it stronger overall.
