Orange Goblin Album Review: “The Wolf Bites Back”

ORANGE GOBLIN
“THE WOLF BITES BACK”
Album Review by Piers Renfree

7/10

Formed in London in 1995, Orange Goblin – vocalist Ben Ward, guitarist Joe Hoare, bassist Martyn Millard and drummer Chris Turner are now 23 years into their career. Produced by Jaime “Gomez” Arellano, Orange Goblin’s new album “The Wolf Bites Back” is full of the band’s trademark AC/DC meets Black Sabbath style of bluesy, doom metal and is out now on Candlelight Records.

Opening song “Sons Of Salem” has a drum intro that leads into a classic, headbanging riff. An acoustic guitar introduces the title song “The Wolf Bites Back” which is a nice, headbanging, chugging song with some nice time changes. Third song “Renegade” is heralded by a lead guitar intro and is a fast paced song reminiscent of the late, great Motörhead, at their best. The song slows in the middle and then picks up again at the end. Bass guitar and drums intro “Sword Of Fire”, the fourth song. It’s a slow-mid paced song for the first part, then over 2 minutes into the song, Ben Ward starts singing and the pace of the song increases quite a bit. “Ghosts Of The Primitives”, the fifth sing strarts as it means to go on; guitar plays a solo over bass guitar and drums, the song picks up the pace, then slows for the break and then picks up again for the end. “In A Bocca Al Lupo” is a gentle instrumental, starting with a quiet played acoustic guitar which then gets a little louder and has lead played over the acoustic strumming.

Seventh Song “Suicide Division” is Orange Goblin doing a short, fast paced punk rock song. “The Stranger” is the eighth song on the album, it has a slow intro which leads into the verse which has a 60’s Blues feel to it. The pace picks up in the middle, then slows again at the end and there is some Hammond Keyboard in the background as the song comes to a close. Ninth song “Burn The Ships” is a mid-paced chug-along headbanger that slows in the middle and picks up again at the end. Final song of the album “Zeitgeist” is another chugging, mid-paced rocker that fades out with the best solo of the album being played. All in all this is full of songs that should go down well in the live arena and should keep the Orange Goblin fans happy.
