Haunt Album Review: “Burst Into Flame”

HAUNT
“BURST INTO FLAME”
Album Review by Gavin Brown

8/10

Haunt follow up last years brilliant Diamond Eyes E.P. with their debut album Burst Into Flame, an album that raises their high standard even further. As soon as the self titled opening track bursts into life, it is more than evident that this is going to be a hell of a ride.

This is prime heavy metal, played with passion and this album cements the fact with the proof that Haunt have the songwriting capabilities to go with their passion for metal. Haunt as a band have evolved from being a solo project by mainman Trevor William Church (also the vocalist/guitarist for the brilliant but doomier Besastmaker) into a full band and they all give their all on Burst Into Flame with guitarist John William Tucker ably assisting Church on six strong duties with a stunning display of catchy riffs and full on metal solos. The rhythm section that consists of bassist Matthew Wilhoit and drummer Daniel ‘Wolfy’ Wilson lay down the rhthymic foundation for Church and Tucker to let loose on and they certainly do that, and the results are catchy as well as inspiring with Church showing exactly why he is held in high regard as a vocalist as well as a fantastic songwriter.

The vibe on the album veers from speedy, full throttle songs like Crystal Ball and My Mirage to a more mid paced style typified by Frozen In Time and the anthemic closing track Looking Glass but every song maintains that killer traditional heavy metal feeling and you won’t be able to stop yourself from headbanging and singing along to it.

The music of Haunt and this album in particular seems to take great influence from classic N.W.O.B.H.M bands like Angel Witch and Praying Mantis as well as the mighty Iron Maiden and mix it up with a Thin Lizzy inspired energy and sound to create electric results and when they are as electric as Burst Into Flame, it’s a sure fire recipe for success.

Repeated listens to Burst Into Flame will leave you in no doubt that Haunt are hell bent on leading the charge when it comes to playing that classic heavy metal sound and it definitely couldn’t be in any safer hands.
