STEEL NIGHT Album Review: “Fight Till The End”

STEEL NIGHT
“FIGHT TILL THE END”
Album Review by Iron Mathew

8/10

Steel Night are a heavy metal band from Mexico, forming in 2017 and releasing their self titled E.P. in the same year. The bands first full length album ‘Fight Till The End’ was released in 2019.

Mexico is a country more well known for tequila, tacos, Aztec and Mayan history, and the popular tourist destinations of Cancun and Acapulco. Mariachi, banda, norteno and ranchera are popular styles of Mexican music, with heavy metal not really a popular style at all. Perhaps one of Mexico’s most well known metal exports is extreme death metal band Brujeria (formed in 1989), along with more recent bands such as Split Heaven (formed in 2003) and Voltax (formed in 2006). And now, a new metal band emerges from Mexico – Steel Night, delivering the traditional heavy metal sound.

Clocking in at over seven minutes in length, it is a bold move, especially by a new band, to open an album with such a lengthy song. Steel Night are taking a chance with the anthemic melodic metal monster ‘We Are Metal’ as song number one. Huge riffs, a monster rhythm and a song title American legends Manowar would be proud of, ‘We Are Metal’ is a rabble rousing call to arms anthem. Picking up pace after the midway point, ‘We Are Metal’ rums amok through the NWOBHM sound, setting the bands stall out for what is yet to come. ‘Run For Your Life’ lifts the pace, the energy and the intensity, and romps along at high velocity. Blazing guitars echo the sound of the NWOBHM as ‘Run For Your Life’ gallops ahead at full steam. A detectable Iron Maiden influence can be heard on ‘Spell Witch’ from the moment it romps into life, more specifically the bands Powerslave era. High intensity melodic heavy metal struts its stuff proudly as ‘Spell Witch’ marches on by. ‘Red Alert’ steps up a gear, no, make that two gears, as it powers on at full tilt. Fists are gonna punch the air in delight and heads are gonna bang very hard in appreciation of a glorious trip down memory lane to the mid eighties sound of British heavy metal. To be honest, it’s hard to believe this band isn’t British…they’re all the way from Mexico.

However, you just can’t get away from the Iron Maiden influence this album oozes. ‘Heavy Metal Storm’ recreates once again the Powerslave era of the British legends. Out and out pace abounds aplenty as ‘Heavy Metal Storm’ gallops furiously on by. The chorus is a chant style affair, with fans everywhere screaming “heavy metal storm” at the tops of their voices. The title song ‘Fight Till The End’ is a lighter, more melodic gallop, more power metal styled than outright heavy metal – although still sounding like it teleported here from the eighties. Am telling you all, there is so much eighties sounding metal on offer here, that I feel like I’m back in 1984… ‘You Lost My Heart’ may have a title more associated with a ballad than a galloping mid tempo hard rocker, but here you have it, hitting hard and kicking harder. And for the third time during the course of this album, Steel Night reference the Powerslave era of Iron Maiden with ‘Wings Of Steel’, quite possibly a distant relative of ‘Aces High’, such is the similarity between the two songs. Take a listen and hear for yourself… The final song on offer is a live version of ‘Made Of Steel’, and despite my best efforts scouring the internet, I cannot find a studio version having ever been released by the band. So, not sure where ‘Made Of Steel’ has come from, but it is a corker of a bonus, and displays the raw energy of the band in a live arena.

Overall, a glorious journey through the wonders of the NWOBHM sound, ‘Fight Till The End’ is a traditional sounding heavy metal album.
