A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH
“WHEN THE WORLD BECOMES UNDONE”
Album Review by Piers Renfree
9/10
Back in 2003, I was round at a friend’s house and they had Corrie on (for people who are unaware, “Corrie” is Coronation Street, the longest running of the mind dulling soap operas on British television, and part of the reason that television licenses should be scrapped). In this scene, they were trying to be “down with the kids”, by having two teenage characters discussing how “Goth” they were, by their favourite Murderdolls song.
No mention of the Fields Of The Nephilim, Andrew Eldritch and the Sisters Of Mercy, legendary goth punks The Misfits, Paradise Lost or the kings of the goth scene back then, the much missed Type O Negative.
Since the demise of that great band, following the tragic passing of bassist, singer & band leader Peter Steele in 2010, two previous members of Type O Negative (Sal Abruscato & Johnny Kelly, both drummers for the band at different points in the band’s career) have worked together in A Pale Horse Named Death. This album “When The World Becomes Undone” is the band’s third album, following “And Hell Will Follow Me” (2011) and “Lay My Soul To Waste” (2013).
Hailing from the same part of the world as Type O, Brooklyn, New York, USA, the band’s current line-up consists of Sal Abruscato – vocals and guitar, Johnny Kelly – drums, Joe Taylor – guitar, Eddie Heedles – guitar and Eric Morgan – bass.
Produced, recorded and mixed by Sal Abruscato and Eric Morgan , the thirteen tracks on this album last for a good sixty two minutes, but at no point do you feel that the album drags or gets boring. The band’s music is very reminiscent of Type O, very heavy, doomy and gothicy but without being a copycat act. The band employ light and shade to their music, Sal Abruscato’s vocals are clean and Eric Morgan’s bass rumbles along happily.
All in all, this is a quality album, a strong contender for my album of the year; and if you are looking for some goth music, you could do a lot worse than start here.
