FATAL CURSE E.P. Review: “Breaking The Trance”

FATAL CURSE
“BREAKING THE TRANCE”
E.P. Review by Piers Renfree

8/10

Christ almighty, but yesterday was insanely hot. I walked out of my flat into a blast furnace. I swear some satanic cultist as-clowns must have performed some dickhead ritual and opened the gates of Hell. Wankers! All I could do was drink water and have cold showers during the day. Oh and on Tuesday, I found out that my GP had been suspended and someone else (another doctor) is now running the surgery. Half the population of the UK is wailing that we’re doomed to eternal damnation, due to the fact that Boris is now residing in Number 10 (yes, Boris Johnson is now the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom). In other news, the well-known and much-loved Dutch actor Rutger Hauer has sadly passed away – you may know him from Blade Runner, Ladyhawke or The Hitcher, I know him as Ravn from The Last Kingdom.

However, I am still breathing, my heart is still beating and thus, I am able to bring to you, dear readers, reviews of some of the best rock & metal that is on offer right now, to bring you aural delight (I said “aural” not “oral”! Get your minds out of the gutter!). Today’s golden nugget is the E.P. “Breaking The Trance”, by American trad metallers, Fatal Curse.
Available on CD, download or to stream via Shadow Kingdom Records Bandcamp, the seven songs, by the New York trio Mike Bowen (vocals), Chris Bowen (drums) and Dave Gruver (guitar), last for just under half an hour, at 28:36. The music is fast paced – a pace that the late, great Lemmy would have been proud of, with time changes and Mike Bowden’s vocals are clean.

The music is very eighties metal influenced and the band sounds like the bastard child of Motörhead and Saxon, raging against the world. This is quite possibly what Metallica’s “Kill Em All” would have sounded like, if they had been a NWOBHM band. These guys should be a hot live act if you get the chance to see them. Until then, boys and girls, spend your pocket money wisely.
