“AGE OF HEROES”

8/10

Eregion are a power metal band from Italy formed in 2012 releasing their debut album ‘Lord Of War’ in 2014. Featuring themes of fantasy, history and Norse mythology, Eregion deliver a melodic, and epic style of power metal. Enduring a couple of line up changes, the band released their sophomore album, ‘Age Of Heroes’ in 2019.

Featuring the same epic and melodic nature of their debut, ‘Age Of Heroes’ is a meandering journey around every corner of the power metal genre. Opening with the two minute atmosphere building instrumental ‘Sacred Woods’, Eregion launch the album proper with the foot stomper ‘Wings Of Eagle’. High paced and highly energetic, ‘Wings Of Eagle’ is a head banger straight out of the blocks. It’s full of pace and power, and exactly how the classic sound of power metal should sound like. ‘Jotunheim’ (meaning World Of The Giants in Norse mythology) is heavy, power metal that packs a weighty punch. It’s catchy and infectious, two of the major attributes to any song. Slowing the pace, but heavying things up and introducing an element of the folk metal style, ‘The Stolen Hammer’ is an epic march of bombastic boom. ‘The Stolen Hammer’ sounds like it should be sung around a camp fire late at night.

‘Ascalon (Siege And Demise)’ is a bit darker than what has gone before, and heavier too, yet loses nothing of the albums overall epic power metal vibe… A vibe that continues with added glory metal, as ‘Hands Of Aesir’ adopts a majestic march. A heavy hitting ride, ‘Hands Of Aesir’ will have fists raised high in the air along with feet tapping the ground, very hard. Slowing the pace right down and adopting the power ballad mantle, ‘Balder’s Bane’ is symphonically cinematic. A glorious tension filled amble ‘Balder’s Bane’ marks the mid point of the album, and also gives the listener a breather, ready for the onslaught of the second half…

…a second half that scorches into life with the speedster ‘Hermod The Brave’. The fastest song on offer by the widest country mile ever seen, ‘Hermod The Brave’ is a glorious romp of purpose filled power metal. Entering anthemic metal territory, ‘I Hel’ is a marching swagger of epic proportions. Mid tempo and heavy hitting ‘I Hel’ is the albums power metal anthem. At over six minutes in length, ‘New Order’ is by far and away the longest song on offer – and is rampant heavy power metal all the way. In complete contrast the final song on offer is a folk metal influenced, drinking song that you would expect a bar full of pirates all to be singing. ‘O-Hey O-Ho’ is a chant style offering that is infectious, qwerky, and a fun end to a very good album.

Overall, a meandering journey through the epic and glory styles of power metal, ‘Age Of Heroes’ is addictive and infectious.
