ARGOS
“DEJ, CO MAS”
Album Review by Iron Mathew
9/10
Argos are a heavy metal band from the Czech Republic, originally forming in 1988, going on hiatus in 1991, reforming in 2018. The bands debut album ‘Dej, co mas’ was released in the summer of 2018.
There is an old saying that states “music is a universal language”, and in the case of the debut album from Czech Republic metallers Argos, that saying rings one hundred percent true. The entire album is sung in the bands native language, I haven’t a clue what they’re singing about, but their music speaks to me in that “universal language”. Thirteen songs fly by in less than an hour, the album quickly into its stride with the bombastic “foot on the monitor” thunder of ‘Mejdan’. The classic sound of traditional heavy metal throbs the speakers as ‘Mejdan’ gallops furiously on to its end. Moving swiftly on, ‘Nebe nezna vyvolenych’ maintains the albums fast paced gallop, adding a bit more of a melodic feel, which ‘Rytin’ keeps afloat as it swaggers on, having more in common with the power metal sound. After just three songs, Argos are proving they have got what it takes to make heads bang and fists punch the air in delight. The title song ‘Dej, co mas’ is gonna invoke some seriously vigorous head banging as the pace quickens, the thunder gets more intense and the addition of a catchy sing a long style chorus makes ‘Dej, co mas’ (the song) an absolute belter.
All songs on the album clock in at under five minutes, with an incredible seven, lasting no more than four minutes, the shortest, just three minutes and one second in length. ‘Divadlo svet’ carries on the traditional heavy metal onslaught, with an avalanche of riffs that echoes the NWOBHM sound. An anthemic, almost hymn like chorus is an absolute joy, and will surely be a crowd favourite sing a long in a live venue. ‘Otrok’ adopts a slightly darker atmosphere as it chugs on its merry way, delivering a more menacing vibe than anything heard on the album so far. And that chorus, just wow… Anthemic and chant style or what? ‘Ne’ quickens the pace once more, setting a blistering pace as it flies along at a speed that will outstrip the Japanese bullet train. These guys certainly know how to metal hard, with ‘Ne’ a glorious heavy metal romp. The buzzing guitar sound of the iconic NWOBHM evolution gives life to the foot stomping, galloping ‘Posledni den’. Now entering the second half of the album and the intense “foot on the monitor” style hasn’t relented one bit. The pace, the power, the infectious and addictive songs on offer, Argos are delivering a very good album of out and out heavy metal.
Adopting a more epic and majestic feel, ‘Charon’ opens with an Iron Maiden style influence, proceeding to foot stomp on at a mid tempo pace. And that guitar buzz, the NWOBHM sound lives everywhere… ‘Ledovy chram’ is an intense and in your face romp of mild aggression. Hitting very hard, ‘Ledovy chram’ melds European style power metal with NWOBHM and a touch of the hard rock genre too. The fastest song on offer ‘Na plnej plyn’, explodes into life and spits fire and flames as it hurtles on at high velocity. Vigorous head banging will accompany this one from its start to its finish. What a glorious end to a very good album, which is almost over… There are two bonus songs on offer, both live recordings from 1990. ‘Metalova kralovna’ and ‘Jen si bez’ take a trip down memory lane almost thirty years.
Overall, a thundering, galloping, fast paced and head bangingly addictive album of out and out heavy metal.
