“Tyrannicide”
Album Review by Iron Mathew

10/10

Asylum are a thrash metal band from Australia formed in 2012 releasing three E.P.’s – ‘Slaughterhouse’ (2013), ‘Concealed Death’ (2016), and the live ‘Live In Melbourne’ (2021). The bands debut full length album ‘Tyrannicide’ was released in 2022…

…featuring nine ferociously fast paced songs in under forty minutes! The bands live shows have been described as “energetic, engaging and musically flawless” – the band transferring that energy into the studio, and onto the new album. An album that hits hard, kicks harder, and will severely test your head banging skills as you try to keep up. Asylum have toured with the likes of Artillery, Destruction, Metal Church, and Tankard, and performed at many of Australia’s metal festivals – Steel Assassins (New South Wales), Shredfest (Queensland), and Legions Of Steel (Victoria), to name just a few.

Unleashing a brutal barrage of savage thrash metal, Asylum hit the ground running with (album) opener ‘Eternal Violence’ – a raging storm of rabid thrash. Delivered at a lightning quick pace, the band are a ferocious beast, devouring the airwaves with ease, and imposing an astonishing level of severity. Watch out metal heads, this could get bloody! And increasing the pace, ‘Victim Complex’ is a thrilling ride of savagery – the band steaming ahead with a ferocity second to none. The opening double salvo has been explosive, dynamic, and simply breath taking – I can’t wait to hear what else ‘Tyrannicide’ (the album) has to offer. And I don’t have to wait very long either, Asylum storming on with ‘Cruelty Obsessed’. The pace, punch, and power of the album is incredible, the band not allowing you an inch of relaxation…ha, ha, ha! Relaxation! You don’t relax when the thrash is this fucking good! ‘Cruelty Obsessed’ flexing the neck muscles to breaking point as the worlds metal heads nod their heads back and forth in a vain attempt to keep up.

Title song ‘Tyrannicide’ is a tsunami of melodic thrash – for about the first thirty seconds or so! And then all hell breaks loose, as the band ramp up the ante, moving at high velocity to deliver a heart pounding rush. The speed and accuracy of the band is phenomenal, with their brand of thrash emphatic and ferocious. A ferocity that doesn’t let up, ‘Imminent Decay’ the bands next barrage of savagery. If you take the “Big 4”, the “Teutonic 4” and the best of British thrash metal, and mix them in a massive cauldron, you may get somewhere near the sound of Asylum – but not spot on! The band have an extra ingredient – a special and highly secretive one that they’re gonna keep very secret! Asylum are giving it all they’ve got with their debut full length, ‘World Asunder’ picking up the baton and charging forth like an army storming no man’s land! Backed by an arsenal of tanks, canons, and bombers! For ‘World Asunder’ is a terrific tirade of fiery explosions, devastating everything in sight to leave only a desolate wasteland.

The pace of the album has been incredible – and with no sign of the band slowing down, ‘Tyrannicide’ (the album) powers on with the jack hammering ‘Insurrection’. Thunder, fire and brimstone all appear tame when lined up against Asylum’s highly charged thrash storm. The speed with which the band began the album hasn’t slowed one iota – Asylum forging ahead with total aplomb and an intensity level that’s setting new heights. And for the first time a little hint of a slow down, but then a defiant no – ‘Sadistic Intent’ foraging forward at a phenomenal speed. Probably the speediest of all the songs on offer, ‘Sadistic Intent’ is a head bangers holy grail – a thrash metal song so fast, it feels like your head is gonna shoot right off your shoulders as you try to bang your head back and forth at the same speed as the song! Good luck with that! Bringing the album to a close, ‘Genocidal Conspiracy’ doesn’t let the side down, maintaining the albums incredible pace and power. ‘Tyrannicide’ (the album) has been an absolute ripper, full of some of the best thrash metal I have heard all year – and that includes the (new) albums by Hatriot, Municipal Waste, Kreator, and Destruction.

Overall, an incredibly fast and ferocious thrash metal album, full of neck breaking speed and phenomenal head bang ability.
