COBRA SPELL E.P. Review: “Love Venom”

COBRA SPELL
“LOVE VENOM”
E.P. Review by Iron Mathew

8.5/10

Cobra Spell are a hard rock band from the Netherlands, formed in 2019 by guitarists Sonia Anubis (Crypta, ex-Burning Witches) and Sebastian “Spyder” Silva (Idle Hands, Silver Talon). Completing the line-up are Alexx Panza (vocals), Angelina Vehera (bass) and Mike “Lucas” Verhof (drums). The bands debut release is the 2020 E.P. ‘Love Venom’ – a rollercoaster ride through the eighties/nineties era of highly provocative glam and sleaze rock.

…with the E.P.’s cover taking on a Whitesnake ‘Love Hunter’ theme, with a naked woman facing a jaws wide open cobra – with ‘Love Hunter’ depicting a naked woman straddling a jaws wide open huge serpent! Classic! Highly energetic and delivering more punch than a punching bag receives on a busy day at a gym…Cobra Spell explode into life with the pulsating ‘Come On Tonight’. Rocking like it’s the eighties/nineties sleaze rock scene all over again, ‘Come On Tonight’ brings to mind bands such as Cinderella, Ratt and Faster Pussycat.

With just four songs on offer, Cobra Spell have done a great job of making a big impression, with turned heads and the pricking up of ears everywhere, as soon as ‘Love Venom’ (the E.P.) is played. ‘Poison Bite’ has plenty o’ bite, as it venomously hits very hard, all punch and crunch as it picks up the pace, nearing a more metal swagger as it rolls on.

The title song ‘Love Venom’ has a mellower mood, placing one foot in the power ballad zone – the other foot standing firm in the hard rock zone. The mix of the two styles/genres is a cracking mix, with ‘Love Venom’ (the song) oozing with sleaze. The final song on offer is the punchy ‘Shake Me’ – throwing haymakers from start to finish. Cobra Spell are an exciting breath of fresh air, pouring fuel on the fire of glam and sleaze rock.

Overall, an energetic and punchy debut, ‘Love Venom’ is an infectious and catchy glam and sleaze rock romp.
