Destroyer Of Light Album Review: “Chamber Of Horrors”

DESTROYER OF LIGHT
“CHAMBER OF HORRORS”
Album Review By Gavin Brown

8/10

Austin doommongers Destroyer Of Light have been making a name for themselves over the past few years with their sprawling sound, a sound that conjures up images of huge towering riffs that have come to life and are smothered in a psychedelic glow and shrouded by a more evil, dark smog , all soundtracked by those thundering riff filled songs. When you listen to Destroyer Of Light these images can’t be far away from your thoughts as the their immersive music takes hold.

On their latest opus Chamber Of Horrors, those images are there in full effect but here, the band take a huge leap forward in terms of their songwriting which is fully realised on this album.

Songs such as Into The Smoke, the simple but so effective Lux Crusher and especially the monumental and mesmerizing Prisoner Of Eternity are perfect examples of a band that are in total control of what they are doing and completely crushing minds while they are doing it. These are impressively grand songs that take you in and won’t let go, full of ideas and executed to a tee, songs that are jam packed full of riffs, passionate howls and a hypnotic groove.

Aside from these three tracks, the album features a couple of instrumentals (these instrumentals definitely aid the mood of the album similar to how Sabbath did it on Master Of Reality with Orchid and Embryo) in the opening Whispers Into The Threshold and the beautiful horror of Twilight Procession and these intertwine with the rest of the songs to create something that is a joy to listen to.

As the album commences with the vast Buried Alive (a song that is aptly titled as it has such a claustrophobic feel to it), you will just want to play the album from start to finish again. And again. And again!

Fans of revered bands such as Sleep, Electric Wizard and Yob should seek this album as soon as possible and immerse themselves thoroughly in the world of Destroyer Of Light, it’s a world that once you step into, you won’t ever leave but you will have a thrilling time for sure.
