DEVIN TOWNSEND Album Review: “Acoustically Inclined, Live In Leeds”

DEVIN TOWNSEND
“Acoustically Inclined, Live In Leeds”
Album Review by Piers Renfree

8.5/10

Devin Townsend is a name that is well known in the heavy rock and metal scene.

This Canadian singer, songwriter, musician and record producer has worked with many people and has to date, twenty five albums released to his name. His list of projects includes the much-loved metal band “Strapping Young Lad”, as well as “Infinity”, “Ocean Machine”, “Physicist”, “Devin Townsend Project” & “The Devin Townsend Band”. The list of people who he has worked with is no less impressive and includes stints with Steve Vai, and The Wildhearts, to name a couple.

This album “Acoustically Inclined, Live In Leeds” is part of Devin’s current “Devolution” series of releases that he is bringing out, whilst COVID has slowed down things with live music.

The album runs for a little over an hour and the songs cover different parts from his whole career. Devin switches his vocals from clean, to haunted beauty, to the odd scream & even almost whispered but his pronunciation is always clear. His guitar playing is king here, though. At times beautifully picked and at others more heavier riffs are on order, but his playing is always clear. Devin’s interactions with the audience are light hearted and informal and the whole thing flows really well.

This album is a must for fans of Devin’s work and fans of acoustic music. More of this Devin…please.
