Epica E.P. Review: “Attack On Titan”

EPICA
“ATTACK ON TITAN”
E.P. Review by Stacey Fawcett

9/10

This E.P. was originally released solely in Japan, however luckily for us earlier this year it was officially released worldwide.  The music was originally composed by Revo from the Japanese Band Linked Horizon (who have written the music for a series of Manga movies.) Epica have taken a few of these and put their spin on them to create a symphonic manga dream.

The E.P. opens with “Crimson Bow & Arrow” an epic masterpiece, which I suspect will be one of many on this album. The combination of operatic and heavy vocals really handS itself to the dynamics of a track like this. I am excited to hear the rest! “Wings Of Freedom” is yet again, heavy, beautiful and meaty. With guitar work which is next to none, its exquisite. The synths however caught me by surprise. This really is another masterpiece. I love what Epica are doing with these songs, it’s quite different from the original but that’s not a criticism. People will either love or hate it.

“If Inside These Walls Was A House” is a vocal masterclass. Although slightly Disney until the guitars come slamming in, picking the track up significantly. This makes so much sense, this is Epica. Now for the last track before the instrumental tracks which in themselves are just outstanding. “Dedicate Your Heart” marches on, it is cinematic making you visualise the battle. You feel you are there ready to fight. This track has some of the best drum and guitar work I have heard in a while from a band like Epica as usually the main focus is only on the vocals. On this E.P. every instrument is given the opportunity to stand out.

The E.P. is a cinematic joy to listen to, however I would have probably enjoyed it more if I was more familiar with ‘Attack On Titan’. My homework for myself is now go away and check this out! I wouldn’t say it is a requirement for the E.P. however, but it would likely give it slightly more context.
