Forged In Black E.P. Review: “Sinner Sanctorum”

FORGED IN BLACK
SINNER SANCTORUM”
E.P. Review By Iron Mathew

8/10

Forged In Black are a heavy metal band from the UK formed in 2013, originally forming in 2007 under the name Merciless Fail, releasing the six song ‘Forged In Black’ E.P. in 2010. The bands musical direction took on a more focused and driven attitude, with the band changing their name to Forged in Black, releasing ‘Forged In Black’ in 2013. Over the years, the band has shared a stage with acts such as Breed 77, Savage Messiah, Beholder, Neverworld and the legendary Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens. In 2017, the band are set to unleash their finest work to date, the four song E.P. ‘Sinner Sanctorum’.

Atmospheric and bold, haunting and chilling, doom laden and heavy, but above all British . . . Forged In Black deliver an opening salvo similar in style to seventies era Black Sabbath. ‘There’s Always Time’ creeps in and builds the atmosphere, finally letting rip in a furious flurry, charging along at a pace that echoes the legendary, evolutionary, sound of the NWOBHM. Fusing together elements of Black Sabbath, Angel Witch and Raven, ‘There’s Always Time’ is classic sounding and traditional heavy metal. Forged In Black are back and doing what they do best.

E.P.’s have always been a little difficult to get your head around what a band are aiming for, as the lack of songs provides only a teaser of the bigger picture an album presents. That said, with the four songs on offer here, Forged In Black have issued a massive statement on the musical direction they are advancing in. ‘Pay The Price’ introduces the buzz guitar sound that made the NWOBHM sound so easily recognisable during the eighties. Chugging guitars propel ‘Pay The Price’ on at a melodic hard rock pace, often changing pace to step into the heavy metal genre. The title song ‘Sinner Sanctorum’ is layered with everything that traditional British heavy metal is known for. Buzzing guitars and galloping rhythms push ‘Sinner Sanctorum’ on at pace, and if you take a good hard listen, you will hear a Judas Priest and an Iron Maiden influence tucked in their too.

Although there are only four songs on offer, there is twenty seven minutes of music to salivate and drool over. Forged In Black are focused and passionate in how they deliver their brand of heavy metal, closing the E.P. with an epic nine minutes plus opus. A wandering and mellow intro breathes life into ‘Crimson Echoes’ as it builds and builds an eerie and tension filled atmosphere. Doom laden riffs and a very heavy rhythm keep ‘Crimson Echoes’ at a mid tempo pace from start to finish.

Overall, four songs of full on British swagger, depicting the NWOBHM sound at its finest, proving that Forged In Black are a rising force in heavy metal.
