HOLYCIDE
“Towards Idiocracy”
Album Review by Iron Mathew

10/10

Holycide are a thrash metal band from Spain formed in 2004 releasing three albums to date – ‘Annihilate… Then Ask!’ (2017), ‘Fist To Face’ (2020), and ‘Towards Idiocracy’ (2024)…

…featuring ten songs across a blistering thirty nine minutes! That’s thirty nine minutes of neck snapping, bone breaking, head crushing thrash metal with more ferocity than the original (1984) Terminator! The Madrid thrashers are on top form, savagely bludgeoning listeners with a brutal array of thrash – ‘A.I. Supremacy’ roaring into life at scorching speed! The band are at full velocity here, delivering head bang-able thrash to please every thrasher everywhere, the classic sound of thrash metal icons Anthrax, Exodus and Kreator rising high in the air.

And after such a speedy start, Holycide increase the speed even further – the title song ‘Towards Idiocracy’ sending the worlds mosh pits into fucking overdrive! ‘Towards Idiocracy’ (the album) began ferociously, and has just gotten more ferocious – and bear in mind we’re only two songs in! Imagine the ferocity level to come! Well imagine no more, for the band waste no time in marching on with ‘Remote Control’ turning the heat way up to scorch the earth with tremendous energy! The opening treble has been nothing short of sensational, the Spanish thrashers devastating everything and everyone standing in their way – nothing and no-one is safe from the bands aggression fuelled onslaught! An onslaught that’s far from over, ‘Towards Idiocracy’ (the album) maintaining its ferocious stature with ‘Lie Is The New Truth’. Holycide have been in top gear since the album began, not slowing down for anything or anyone, including the local policia! The band are truly a tour de force, crushing everything in sight to leave only desolation in their wake!

Thundering into sight with a brutality not heard so far, ‘Power Corrupts’ is both aggression and ferocity unleashed, Holycide giving thrash metal fans exactly what they want – blistering speed and head bang ability of the tallest order! Whatever it is the Spaniards eat and drink to give them the fuel for this style of thrash, I hope they’ve got an unlimited supply, for I’d hate for them to run out! Especially as we’re only half way through the bands new album – ‘Technophobia’ (the fear of new technology) storming on with fury and flair! The unstoppable machine that is Holycide are frighteningly fierce, I for one wouldn’t wanna meet them in a dark alley late at night all my own! No fucking way! But like every other thrasher on the planet, I’d jump at the chance to go fucking wild in the mosh pit down the front at a Holycide concert! The speed of ‘Towards Idiocracy’ (the album) is breathless, the band roaring on with ‘Angry For Nothing’, not giving listeners a single second to catch a breath – here’s hoping you’ve got a good pair of lungs on ya as there’s still three more songs to come before the albums end when a breather will be forth coming!

And the first of the final three, is a barnstorming cover of the Atrophy classic ‘Chemical Dependency’, taken from the bands 1988 album ‘Socialized Hate’. And to be honest, Holycide have managed to do what not too many bands can do when it comes to cover versions – they’ve made it better than the original! With more aggression and menace than ever before, (Holycide’s) ‘Chemical Dependency’ is fast, furious and fucking brilliant! I haven’t mentioned the albums immense intensity level yet, focusing on the more ferocious side of ‘Towards Idiocracy’ (the album) – ‘Pleased To Be Deceived’ maintaining an unbroken level of intensity since minute one song one! And as Holycide power towards the final song, there’s gonna be shattered bones and crushed skulls littered everywhere as a result of the bands brutal barrage of savagery – ‘Flamethrower ‘Em All’ rounding off a thirty nine minute assault of blistering thrash! Every song on offer is head bang-able, fist pump-able, and worthy of its place on the album.

Overall, aggression fuelled and ferocious. ‘Towards Idiocracy’ is fast and furious with sky high levels of brutality, savagery and intensity.
