JORN
“HEAVY ROCK RADIO II – EXECUTING THE CLASSICS”
Album Review by Syl Pdll

9/10

Jorn Lande is a Norwegian singer with a solid solo career in the metal scene worldwide. This year he paid tribute to the artists who have influenced his musical career and helped him to consolidate his sound over the years. Heavy Rock Radio II – Executing The Classics is an album that is distinguished by his interpretive strength and a heavy sound that combines classic rock with the melodic and power metal that is worth listening to.

This album begins with Lonely Nights (Bryan Adams) that presents a mix of heavy rock with some melodic dyes without losing sight of the original structure of the song. Jorn shows us his vocal ability from the use of different vocal ranges. The sound of the bagpipe introduces us to Winning (Santana) and shows us a softer and melodic sound compared to the previous song. The mixture of folk elements and heavy rock constitute an interesting proposal where the vocal part moves using high notes. New York Minute (Don Henley) is a song full of emotion in its first chords and that combines perfectly with the voice of Jorn Lande. A more rock version compared to the original song and showing the creative ability of this European singer to appropriate the songs and make them his own.

The next song is Needles And Pins (The Searchers) whose vocal performance evokes us to the era of the great rock classics, although musically speaking it presents a metal-oriented proposal with a rhythmic and fresh base looking to approach the new generations. Love (Santana) is the fifth song of this album that leads to mixed feelings such as sadness, fear and hope. The instrumental part creates an atmosphere that envelops you with the plot of the song without losing Jorn’s musical identity as a soloist. I Do Believe In You (America) allows to appreciate Jorn experimenting with different vocal ranges generating emotion in the song, it is also possible to identify the presence of the organ in the instrumental part evoking the sound of groups such as Deep Purple or Rainbow. The keyboard chords in combination with the guitars introduce us to Night Life (Foreigner) that recovers the festive spirit of the original song influenced by other musical styles such as soul and that can be seen in vocal performance, as well as in the handling of musical instruments, it is certainly a perfect melody to be sung during a concert.

Bad Attitude pays tribute to one of the most iconic classic rock bands: Deep Purple. It is one of the songs most attached to its original version and that shows the musical influence that has allowed to consolidate Jorn’s solo sound. One of the most versatile songs on this album is Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn) by Bob Dylan in its original version. It is a fun and modern melody in which each of the musical instruments shines with its own light including the vocal part that shows its ability to play with different styles and vocal ranges. Mystery reminds us of the memory of Ronnie James Dio in his solo facet and that is one of the main musical influences of this Norwegian singer and that presents us with a song oriented to melodic rock in which the sound of the keyboard and the guitar are the main protagonists. The last song is The Rhythm Of The Heat (Peter Gabriel) in which Jorn takes his creativity to another level by appropriating the song by transforming it into a heavier version with a sound that denotes the influence of classic rock. The use of high and low voices throughout the song adds more dynamism.

Jorn presented in this album a series of songs whose origin comes from other musical genres within the rock scene that were decisive in defining their vocal and instrumental style. Heavy Rock Radio II presents a heavier and classic sound unlike the first part published almost four years ago. If you like listening to renewed versions of yesterday’s classics, this album will surely be of interest to you.
