KALIDIA Album Review: “The Frozen Throne”

KALIDIA
“THE FROZEN THRONE”
Album Review by Piers Renfree

8/10

Well the cars outside are iced up and the Met Office has issued a weather report to warn us that the UK will be under ten foot of snow (or something – being in a city surrounded by hills, we usually hear that the country is buried under the cold, white stuff, then look out the window and think -“Where is it? There’s none of it here.” And strangely, despite being equipped to issue these warnings, the UK is forever unprepared for it. D’oh!). So it seems a fitting time to review the second album from Italy’s Kalidia, “The Frozen Throne”.

Kalidia – Nicoletta Rosellini (vocals), Frederico Paolini (guitar), Roberto Donati (bass) and Dario Gozzi (drums), formed in 2010 and released their debut demo E.P. in 2012. This was followed up in 2014, with their self released debut album “Lies Device”.

So far, Kalidia have played to audiences in Germany, the UK and their native Italy and shared stages with bands such as Rhapsody Of Fire, Ancient Bards, Serenity and Timo Tolkki, to name a few.

The eleven songs on “The Frozen Throne” should appeal to fans of Rhapsody of Fire, Kamelot, Epica, HammerFall and Stratovarius. Epic, melodic, catchy, atmospheric and with time changes aplenty and Nicoletta Rosellini’s crystal clear vocals, the album doesn’t disappoint, from the opening title song, to the final song, “Queen Of The Forsaken”. Second song, “Circe’s Spell” has a middle eastern sounding melody, while “Black Sails”, the album’s third song has a bit of a hornpipe-y influence in the melody.

The fifth song “To The Darkness I Belong” has a bit of a medieval melody and the first of the album’s two guests, violinist, Gabrielle Boschi. The second of the two guests is David Bassin who provides vocals on the sixth song “Myth Of Masada”, while “Go Beyond”, the album’s eighth song, has a Tim Burton-esque sounding intro.

All in all, this is a great listen and hopefully, we shall be hearing more from Kalidia, soon.
