KILL RITUAL E.P. Review: “Thy Will Be Done”

KILL RITUAL
“Thy Will Be Done”
E.P. Review by Iron Mathew

8/10

Kill Ritual are a heavy metal band from the USA formed in 2010 by former members of Imagika and Eldritch. The band released their debut album ‘The Serpentine Ritual’ in 2012, with two more albums following in quick succession – ‘The Eyes Of Medusa’ (2014) and ‘Karma Machine’ (2016) – both accompanied by tours across the USA. 2018 saw the release of the bands fourth album ‘All Men Shall Fall’, along with a tour across North America with Iced Earth and Sanctuary. Armed with a new singer, the band released their fifth album ‘The Opaque And The Divine’ in 2020. And in 2021, Kill Ritual released the E.P. ‘Thy Will Be Done’, featuring five songs from the recording sessions for ‘The Opaque And The Divine’ – songs that didn’t make it on to the album…

…referenced by the E.P.’s titular sentiment. The bands meld of traditional heavy metal and thrash is well and truly in full flight – the band blazing their way through the five songs on offer in a little under thirty minutes! Storming into life, ‘Angels In Black’ is an aggressive and furious rampage of thrashy heavy metal – probably more thrash than heavy metal actually! ‘Angels In Black’ is a barnstorming start, head bang-able to the max, and an instant head turner. The aggressive, and quite frankly menacing nature of the opening song, is doubled for ‘Light The Fire (Tonight We Fly)’, mixing pace and power with a heavy foot stomp. And the vocal howl is a snarling, venom fuelled fury. Title song ‘Thy Will Be Done’ is a high velocity gallop, dropping some of the aggression heard so far, in favour of a more traditional metal feel. And the chorus break is so melodic and catchy, in concert crowds are gonna love it.

Keeping the gallop going, ‘Obey The Ritual’ harks back to the glorious days of heavy metal, portraying a classic NWOBHM guitar sound – the band showing their prowess at delivering traditional metal with an eighties flavour and nuances of thrash. The fifth and final song on the E.P. ‘The Opaque Is Divine’ is a nine minute meander through the bands penchant for blending different styles of metal. In the mix this time, are NWOBHM, the traditional “foot on the monitor” style, thrash, and a meld of the glory and epic styles too. Atmospheric and at times sinister, ‘The Opaque Is Divine’ has an air of fear about it, bludgeoning listeners with a ferocity not heard anywhere else on the E.P.

Overall, a cracking mix of thrash and traditional heavy metal, blended with aggression and menace.
