Lady Beast Album Review: “Vicious Breed”

LADY BEAST
VICIOUS BREED”
Album Review By Iron Mathew

10/10

Lady Beast are a heavy metal band from the USA formed in 2009. releasing their self titled debut album in 2012, followed by ‘Lady Beast II’ in 2015. The ‘Metal Immortal’ E.P. was released in 2016, with the bands third album ‘Vicious Breed’ released in 2017.

Heavily influenced by the NWOBHM and the sound of traditional heavy metal, Lady Beast continue their quest for world domination with thirty six minutes of exhilarating heavy metal. The bands new album is quickly into its stride with the rampant ‘The Way’ bustling its way through the airways. Galloping fast, ‘The Way’ is an immediate like, full of catchiness and a venomous vocal delivery from singer Deborah Levine. This is traditional heavy metal as it should sound. The buzz style guitar sound of the NWOBHM gives life to ‘Lone Hunter’, as it assumes a chugging rhythm. Mid tempo in pace, ‘Lone Hunter’ is a heavy foot stomp. Pace does change, to become a blistering blur of scorching guitars, proving Lady Beast are at the top of their game right now. With an intro reminiscent of UK icons Iron Maiden, ‘Seal The Hex’ burns slowly into life, exploding into a furious fury of fast paced heavy metal. Charging along at speed and full of energy, ‘Seal The Hex’ is head bangingly addictive heavy metal.

Lady Beast may be an American band, but they have certainly taken on the iconic NWOBHM sound and after only just three songs, ‘Vicious Breed’ (the album) is turning in a great performance. The title song bursts into life and races off at high velocity. With its blistering pace, ‘Vicious Breed’ borders on the speed metal genre as it runs riot across the airways. A superb screaming guitar solo adds to the exhilaration that ‘Vicious Breed’ offers, with excitement levels off the scale. There is no let up in pace either as ‘Get Out’ rampages into view and scorches the earth as it rockets off. ‘Get Out’ has NWOBHM stamped all over it, and for me, who grew up during the eighties alongside the evolution of the NWOBHM genre, ‘Get Out’ would not be out of place during that era. Lady Beast have got the formula spot on, and if I wasn’t already in love with this band, I would be now…

Dropping all pace and power, ‘Sky Graves’ rolls in gently, boldly building tension and atmosphere as it struts its stuff. ‘Sky Graves’ is an instrumental and shows Lady Beast as more than just a full on, “foot on the monitor” type of band. Okay, ‘Sky Graves’ does explode into life halfway through, but the musicianship is top notch with some superb guitar work from start to finish. Bringing vocals back to the album, ‘Every Giant Shall Fall’ is eighties inspired heavy metal, very much in the vein of British bands Raven and Angel Witch. Mid to high tempo in pace, ‘Every Giant Shall Fall’ foot stomps on its way, standing tall and proud in the world wide genre of heavy metal. All too soon and the album comes to an end, but remember you can always press the replay button… ‘Always With Me’ is mid paced and a superb chugger of a song. With its traditional heavy metal sound taking you back to the early eighties when NWOBHM was in its infancy, ‘Always With Me’ will delight and excite fans everywhere. Lady Beast have delivered their best offering yet.

Overall, a bustling slice of “foot on the monitor” style heavy metal from a band very much on the up, making a huge impact on the world wide heavy metal scene.
