MOTORPSYCHO Album Review: “Kingdom Of Oblivion”

MOTORPSYCHO
“Kingdom Of Obivion”
Album Review by Piers Renfree

8/10

Taking their name from the Russ Meyer film of the same name, Motorpsycho come from Trondheim in Norway and were formed in 1989.

Motorpsycho blend a mixture of grunge, metal and indie rock with progressive, psychedelic, jazz, country and other elements for flavour.

The band consist of Bent Saether (bass and vocals), Hans Magnus “Snah” Ryan (guitar and vocals) and Tomas Järmyr (drums). “Kingdom Of Oblivion” is their twenty-sixth album, since their “Lobotomizer” debut in ‘91.

This is my first time listening to Motorpsycho and to me, there is a very 1970’s freedom and feel in the music, before things had to be pigeonholed to the extreme. Heavy, bluesy riffs that would happily sit alongside early Black Sabbath or Deep Purple songs on the radio, drive along songs which have a more 1990’s indie rock feel to their vocal lines. Then there are the softer, gentle moments that are reminiscent of Led Zeppelin’s folky side.

The production isn’t too polished, giving a raw feel that adds to the ambience of the record.

This is a very interesting record and ticks many boxes for me.
