NOTHING SACRED E.P. Review: “Leviathan”

NOTHING SACRED
“Leviathan”
E.P. Review by Iron Mathew

9/10

Nothing Sacred are a thrash metal band from Australia founded in 1983, releasing their debut album ‘Let Us Prey’ in 1988. During the recording of their second album in 1989, the band went on “hiatus” – the album never seeing the light of day! Returning to the metal scene in 2012, the band travelled to Japan in 2015 to perform, and released a new single ‘First World Problems’ – the bands first new music in over thirty years! In 2021, ‘No Gods’ – Nothing Sacred’s sophomore album – was released, followed by the six song E.P. ‘Leviathan’, emerging in 2023.

One of Australia’s longest serving metal bands, Nothing Sacred deliver a glorious blend of traditional heavy metal and thrash – heavy yet melodic and insanely infectious. The six songs on offer are a mix of new and older songs, and sees the return of former vocalist Chris Stark to the fold. The two new songs are number one and two on the E.P. and are lyrically connected to the Ukrainian war. The first ‘Leviathan’, is a hard hitting mid paced mid tempo thunder stomp, sharing much of its sound with the traditional style of heavy metal – the rest with thrash! And the vocals, a mix of raspy and throaty, very suitable to the bands brash musical stance. The second new song ‘Drone’, is heavier, faster, and features the old school “foot on the monitor” feel. The head bang ability of the two new songs is sky high, as is the infectious level.

The next two songs are re-recorded versions of two classics from the bands debut album ‘Let Us Prey’ – namely ‘Guardian’, and ‘Sir Megma’. The first ‘Guardian’ is gloriously heavy riffing, brash in nature, yet highly melodious at the same time – Nothing Sacred showing their prowess at seamlessly blending together thrash with traditional metal. ‘Sir Megma’ is a heavy thunder stomp that’s gonna knock your block off! The energy and force oozing from ‘Sir Megma’ is incredible, the band shaking the ground with an immense level of intensity.

‘Sudden Death’ is a previously unreleased song – and is a hurricane fuelled riot of raucous thrash metal. With a head bang-able aura that’s gonna send the mosh pits into overdrive, ‘Sudden Death’ is a terrific burst of energy. The sixth and final song on offer is a trance remix of ‘Drone’ – and I’ll leave you to make up your mind! With rumours of a new album on its way, ‘Leviathan’ (E.P.) is a cracking way to introduce the new (well actually, returning) singer and show fans and followers the expected sound and direction of the new album.

Overall, six songs of new and old material that shows Nothing Sacred in various moods, whetting the appetites of fans for the new album.
