Overruled are a thrash/speed metal band from the Netherlands formed in 2012, releasing their self titled E.P. in 2013. The bands first full length offering ‘Hybris’, was released in 2018.

The debut album from Dutch metallers Overruled is a blistering forty one minutes of adrenalin pumping, fast paced thrash, with massive doses of speed metal thrown in. The opening song ‘Pawns Of War’ explodes into life and is immediately up and running at full tilt. The combination of the two genres speed and thrash, is nothing short of spectacular, as ‘Pawns Of War’ ferociously rampages on. Without a pause for breath, the pace quickens with the electrifying ‘Burning Bridges’. Full velocity, highly intense and very energetic, ‘Burning Bridges’ is an experience of scorching proportions that may just leave you burned. The title song ‘Hybris’ maintains the albums fast paced “foot on the monitor” style, injecting a dose of the melodic and sounding like it should be rooted at the heavier end of the heavy metal genre, standing next to, and having beers with, bands such as German power metallers Rage and Canadian thrashers Annihilator.

The pace of the album is just incredible, and shows no sign of relenting as the high speed ‘She-Devil’ romps into view and rockets off. With a clean and clear vocal performance throughout the entire album making it easier to listen and sing a long to, Overruled are delivering a mesmeric metal experience. I haven’t heard this great a combination of thrash and speed metal since (the aforementioned) Rage released their ‘Seasons Of The Black’ album last year. ‘Purgatory’ is a one minute mellow instrumental with a spoken word passage, and acts as a breather, and also a pause, for any neck muscle pain to subside. ‘Cos believe me when I say, for the remainder of the album you will need your neck muscles at their most flexible. The album steams onward with the thunderous ‘Follow His Order’, nodding its head toward the classic, and traditional sound of heavy metal.

The blistering speed is maintained as the fierce ‘Lust For Power’ storms in. and just like a force 12 hurricane, leaves a trail of devastation in its wake. ‘Hybris’ (the album) is a stunning cacophony of thunder, fire and brimstone, and will delight head bangers all around the world. Mixing elements from three of my favourite metal genres, ‘Run For Your Life’ is a sensational romp of power, speed and thrash. The thunderous rhythm ‘Run For Your Life’ displays is mesmeric and infectious, and will have fans drooling with excitement. The final song on offer is high speed, highly energetic and a thunderous rage of fury. ‘Losing Sanity’ brings a stunningly quick and very fast paced album to a close in a blaze of glory. ‘Hybris’ (the album) is not for the faint hearted, and is a cracking debut offering.

Overall, an unrelenting journey of speed, thrash and power, ‘Hybris’ is a thunderous ride of furious heavy metal.
