SKINLESS
“SAVAGERY”
Album Review by Gavin Brown
8/10
Since they returned in 2013 after initially disbanding for a couple of years, Albany, New York death metal masters Skinless made a welcome return to the death metal world with the brutal Only The Ruthless Remain in 2015, an album that not only was aptly titled but also a reminder just how focused a band Skinless are when it comes to prime, pummeling death metal.
The band return with their new album Savagery, and this one is just as aptly titled as its predecessor as they deliver an immersive lesson in aural viciousness. The album delivers this viciousness from the very beginning of the title track that opens the album and doesn’t let up until it has finished. Tracks like the furious Skull Session, Exacting Revenge and Line Of Dissent are Skinless in their prime with the guttural vocals of Sherwood Webber (aka Thunder Wheel, the latest in a long line of vocalists in the history of Skinless) fitting the murderous grooves perfectly again with the rest of the band demonstrating how good musicians they are, particularly guitarist Noah Carpenter, who is on of the most underrated guitarists in the metal world.
The bulldozing ferocity of Savagery is complemented with the dazzling instrumental song Reversal Of Fortune and the creeping intro to Cruel Blade Of The Guillotine which showcase a different side of Skinless, one that is still heavy but done so with a more haunting and macabre vibe which works brilliantly and adds to the deathly vibe of the album which when it ends with the grooving High Rate Extinction, you are struck at how brutal a ride it has just been.
Savagery is the sound of a band who are combining their experience with their passion and honing their sound to deliver something that is more brutal than ever and is on a heaviness par with their earlier albums Trample The Weak, Hurdle The Dead and From Sacrifice To Survival but with an even more savage edge which makes the albums title all the more real. Another superb record from Skinless that will make you glad that they decided to return to the depths of the death metal abyss.
