THREAT SIGNAL
“DISCONNECT”
Album Review By Gavin Brown
7/10
Hamilton, Canada’s Threat Signal bring their heavy metal sound (a mixture of classic metal and thrash with more than a hint of melody) to the fore once again as they follow up their self titled last album with Disconnect. This is an album that builds upon the band’s past musical output and boosts it with a renewed approach to crafting their songs and focusing on those melodic flourishes. A lot has happened in the world of metal since Threat Signal released that last album back in 2011, but this break has given them an energetic focus as they blast back with Disconnect, and blast back they certainly do with ease.
The band waste no time as they kick off the album with Elimination Process, a detonation of slick yet heavy riffs, energetic grooves and a massive chorus that announces without a doubt that Threat Signal are back.
That confident beginning continues as the band launch into the punishing rhythms of Nostalgia, before the anthemic Walking Alone showcases a different approach to the bands sound with its more classic rock orientated feel, although it still sounds in place with what has come before it.
That is just the half of it though, as the full on metal of Exit The Matrix and Aura (which at times, especially riff wise) is reminiscent of fellow Canadians Annihilator) sits at ease with the more laid back and melancholic Falling Apart and Betrayal, resulting in a cohesive and eclectic listen. The massive sounding (and massively titled) To Thine Own Self Be True combines all the best points of Threat Signal in its duration and comes across as the perfect advertisement for the band’s sound.
Disconnect ends with the blast of Dimensions and the epic Terminal Madness, with the latter song proving to be a great closer for the album: a ten minute monster of a track and a great way to finish off the album. It’s a song that takes in many twists and turns and showcases the talent that the band have as players.
Disconnect is an ambitious album that takes in many facets of metal and what makes it so great. It’s got heaviness and melody in equal measure but perhaps more importantly, it’s got passion and heart running through it and Threat Signal should be proud of this album as it announces to the world that they are back and that they have the songs to stand up tall in the metal realm.
