WARCALL
“Dead End Pt. 1”
E.P. Review by Piers Renfree
8/10
Montreal, Québec, Canada; to wrestling fans it is the city where the infamous “screwjob” took place at Survivor Series in November 1997 (when the owner of the then WWF, now WWE, had the bell rung on the champion, longest serving wrestler and their biggest star of the day, Bret “Hitman” Hart, changing the agreed outcome of the match) – to thrash metallers WarCall, it is the place they hail from.
Currently comprising of Gord (vocals and bass), Mat (guitar), JC (guitar) and Phil (drums), WarCall are a DIY band who write, record, mix and master their own music and book their own tours.
The band have been touring since 2008 and not only have they played in their native Canada, but also WarCall have trodden stages in Europe as well and they have toured with notable acts such as Anvil, ex-Iron Maiden singer Paul Di’anno and Slaves On Dope as well as others.
This E.P. is one of two that are planned to be released this year, “Dead End Pt. 2” is expected in the autumn. They follow the band’s previous releases, which to date are 2008’s “Demonarchy” LP, “Blood, Guts and Dirt” LP (2013), “III” LP (2015), and “Invaders” LP (2017).
The four songs here run for a little over twenty minutes, yet these twenty minutes could see you in A&E with serious headbanging injuries.
There is a blistering pace to the band’s music with heavy, crushing riffs and growled yet clear vocals. To my ears this comes across as a mixture of Slayer-esque thrash, with moments of Maiden-esque solos, with Karl Willets of Bolt Thrower supplying the vocals. The band incorporate tempo changes and melodies, and this works surprisingly well.
Fans of thrash and death metal could do a lot worse than to check out WarCall.
