Zarpa are a heavy metal band from Spain forming in 1977, releasing their debut album in 1978. The band have released studio albums, live albums and E.P.’s consistently throughout their career and with their forty year anniversary almost upon them, Zarpa are set to release studio album number fifteen.
Galloping and full of pace traditional heavy metal is what Zarpa have built their reputation playing. Influenced by the evolutionary NWOBHM, these metallers from Spain have taken that sound onboard and deliver hard hitting and punchy songs. Zarpa sing in their native tongue and have not bowed to the international pressure to sing in English. ‘Tropas Del Bien Y Del Mal’ kicks the new album off in bombastic, traditional heavy metal style with a thunderous, galloping rhythm that will make you sit up and take notice. Get those heads ready to head bang hard as ‘Yo Quiero Más’ comes to life with a buzzing, chainsaw style guitar riff. Pounding hard, ‘Yo Quiero Más’ is an infectious and catchy song with a memorable guitar riff and a chorus you can sing along to (only if you know the Spanish language). ‘Un Peregrino Soy’ sees the pace slow down to a mid tempo, majestic foot stomp. Thunderous and punchy, ‘Un Peregrino Soy’ is an epic anthemic romp.
For nigh on forty years Zarpa have consistently delivered traditional heavy metal to their loyal legions of fans and ‘Corazón Eléctrico’ is a storming, head bangers dream. Heavy guitars, loud and brash, ‘Corazón Eléctrico’ will also have your feet stomping. The NWOBHM influence is clear to hear, as song by song, the riffing, the drumming, the singing, all share traits with the good old NWOBHM style. Energy and intensity rise high as ‘Buscando Un Nuevo Mundo’ takes off at high velocity and rips through the airways at a blistering pace. ‘Buscando Un Nuevo Mundo’ is pure speed metal and yet is still melodic enough to have another sing a long chorus. A short guitar warble breathes life into ‘Un Perfecto Plan’ as it winds itself up and begins to pummel your senses with its slow and heavy foot stomp. A more menacing vocal delivery adds a sinister touch to the song too. The traditional, melodic heavy metal that British legends Judas Priest deliver inspires ‘Soldados De La Fe’ to be a solid ball of hard rock that just rolls on and on, not caring what or who gets in its way.
The title song ‘Dispuesto Para Atacar’ picks up the pace and is one of the best songs on the album. Rocking hard with a superb melodic influence, the chorus is one of the most catchy you will ever hear. The guitar hooks are so memorable and with such an infectious rhythm you will either be singing or humming ‘Dispuesto Para Atacar’ long after it ends. Pace returns with ‘Vivir Con Honor’ as it rockets by. A heavy, chugging rhythm propels the song along and with enough melodic moments thrown in ‘Vivir Con Honor’ is again a catchy and infectious song. Ahh, the traditional British NWOBHM guitar riff that opens ‘El Reverendo Judas’ almost throws you right back to the eighties. Add a galloping rhythm and a clean and clear vocal display, close your eyes for a moment and you may just believe that you are indeed back in the eighties. Ending the album is the majestic speed metal tinged ‘Ecos Del Fin’. Out and out power metal, played at a high tempo with an abundance of energy, ‘Ecos Del Fin’ brings the album to close in a blaze of guitars and galloping rhythms.
Overall, hard rocking, traditional heavy metal with an immense NWOBHM influence, Zarpa deliver head banging anthems that are catchy and infectious.
