A HIGHER DEMISE
“TO DEATH OR VICTORY”
E.P. Review By Iron Mathew
9/10
A Higher Demise are a metalcore band from the UK formed in 2012 with their debut release, ‘The Doctor Will See You Now’ E.P. emerging in 2014. ‘Entropy’ was released as a video single in 2017 as a teaser from their ‘To Death Or Victory’ E.P. which has just been released.
A Higher Demise are a furious blend of growled and clean vocals, thunderous rhythms and melodic hard rock, all fuelled by passion and aggression. The new E.P. has all of this in abundance with ‘Looking In’ getting the E.P. underway with a superb piano intro, and the two vocal styles of the bands lead singer intertwining perfectly. ‘Entropy’ explodes into life in a ferocious barrage of thunderous riffing and catchy rhythms. An aggressive and growled lead vocal performance is supported by clean and clear backing vocals, ‘Entropy’ is full of electrifying energy and pace.
‘Tear It Down’ brings a more melodic feel to proceedings, with its fist in the air vibe and catchy sing a long style chorus. ‘The End Of Us’ throws its considerable weight around, pounding at the senses with sheer brutality. A surprise is in store for the listener as female vocals kick in, courtesy of the bands bass player, giving ‘The End Of Us’ a sound not too dissimilar to (early) Evanescence. Razor sharp and cutting like a very sharp knife, ‘In The First Place’ is aggressive and in your face with some really guttural, near death metal style vocals. Very heavy, ‘The End Of Us’ will hurt you if you’re not prepared for its brutal aural assault.
‘The Obituary’ brings a touch of the melodic back to the E.P. along with some awesome buzzing guitars that chop endlessly and a vocal performance that is one of the strongest on the E.P. The two styles of singing by lead singer Charlie Serafini will sorely be missed, as he has announced his departure from the band, which makes this his final recording with A Higher Demise. The band will continue and have begun searching for a new singer, but for now, the E.P. is brought to a close with the aggressive assault of ‘Endgame’. A major surprise is in store though, with the introduction of much softer and gentler singing, evoking an emotional feel, a feeling that is in stark contrast to the bands usual in your face and aggressive style.
Overall, a hard hitting and very heavy slab of aggression mixing growled and clean singing, with a few surprises thrown in, this is A Higher Demise at their very best.
