Power Quest Album Review: “Sixth Dimension”

POWER QUEST
SIXTH DIMENSION”
Album Review By Iron Mathew

10/10

Power Quest are a power metal band from the UK formed in 2001 by keyboardist Steve Williams after his departure from DragonHeart (the band that went on to become DragonForce). Power Quest endured numerous line-up changes throughout a ten year recording career that spawned five studio albums, with the band eventually splitting in 2013, due to financial difficulties and a lack of support from a record label. During a three year hiatus, Steve worked with melodic metal band Eden’s Curse, appearing on their 2013 album ‘Symphony Of Sin’. In 2016, Steve announced that Power Quest were to reform with a new line-up, releasing ‘Face The Raven’ E.P. later the same year. The bands sixth studio album ‘Sixth Dimension’ was released in 2017.

Delivering a blend of European power metal and classic British heavy metal sounds, Power Quest return with an album full of energy and bombast. ‘Lords Of Tomorrow’ gets the album off to an electrifying start. Full of pace and full on, in your face metal, ‘Lords Of Tomorrow’ is high energy, high intensity speed metal for the most devoted of fans to head bang to. Thunderous in all respects, ‘Lords Of Tomorrow’ is a majestical way to announce your return to the world of metal. The more melodic side to Power Quest makes its presence felt as ‘Starlight City’ romps in and gallops forth in head bangingly addictive fashion. Add in a sing a long style chorus, and after just two songs, Power Quest are breathing fire and hitting very hard. The first single off the album, ‘Kings And Glory’, picks up the pace and is a majestic romp of speed metal. Played at a furious pace, matching that of speed metallers DragonForce, Cellador and Bloodbound, Power Quest are punching hard, kicking harder and are revelling in the new found energy the new line-up has created.

A cracking buzzing style guitar riff, synonymous with the classic sound of the NWOBHM breathes life into ‘Face The Raven’. Hitting very hard, ‘Face The Raven’ is punchy, chunky and has oodles of melodic hard rock pouring out from every twist and turn. And talking of melodic hard rock, ‘No More Heroes’ is a belter, a superb foot tappingly addictive and infectious, “bring a smile to your face” type song. The catchy sing a long style chorus is the icing on the cake of one of the best hard rock songs you’re likely to hear for some time. Although the new album only has nine songs on offer, it does clock in at fifty five minutes, giving the listener nearly an hour of head banging, fist punching and singing along. Turning up the heat, rocking hard and fast, ‘Revolution Fighters’ gallops along at pace, featuring a much heavier feel than anything that’s gone before. Power Quest are masters of the sharp edged melodic hard rock sound, and in the shape of ‘Revolution Fighters’ they are on top form.

Melodic hard rock and power metal are the two styles of music that Power Quest play, effortlessly intertwining them both to great effect. Add a dash of catchiness and a heap of addictiveness, ‘Sixth Dimension’ (the album) is a spectacular and glorious return to the world of heavy metal. ‘Pray For The Day’ is hard rocking, catchy and foot tappingly addictive. Throughout the album, the vocals are clean and clear, the guitars duel and fight, all the while maintaining the most infectious rhythms ever. This is the best Power Quest offering yet. With a dramatic increase in pace, ‘Coming Home’ sets off at a blistering pace, braking hard, leaning towards power ballad and then galloping off, with levels of intensity and energy right off the scale. Get those necks warmed up for some serious head banging as Power Quest deliver the fastest song on the album and a delight for all head bangers the world over. It’s an old saying, but “all good things come to an end” and so does this album. Not without one last hurrah though… Chiming in at nine minutes ‘The Sixth Dimension’ is an epic and glorious heavy metal romp of everything that’s good about this genre of music. Power Quest deliver an atmospheric and tension filled song that sways effortlessly from heavy, to rock, to power, all the while retaining the hard melodic edge that has quickly become the signature Power Quest sound.

Overall, a blistering album of melodic hard rock and power metal, delivered at a breathless pace, returning Power Quest to the forefront of the power metal genre.
