VANDALLUS
“ON THE HIGH SIDE”
Album Review By Iron Mathew
8/10
Vandallus are a hard rock band from the USA formed in 2015 releasing their debut album in 2016.
The album opens with the short, bombastic ‘Rat’ that races to a crescendo before ‘Break The Storm’ thunders in with a hard rocking vibe similar in style to German legends Scorpions. A catchy, sing a long chorus that does remind you of ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’ era Scorpions. Title song ‘On The High Side’ takes its own route sound wise and is so catchy and infectious that you will be singing along even before knowing the lyrics. ‘Who’s Chasing Me’ slows the pace to a thunderous foot stamp, that will involuntarily make you nod your head. Guitars are clean, rhythms infectious and the vocals are of the clean and clear style.
Slowing to an almost ballad like pace ‘Running Lost’ may have you swaying from side to side but the lighters will definitely remain in your pockets. There is an underlying feeling that the power here is kept under wraps although you know it is just bursting to be set free. And set free it is as ‘Back To The Grind’ races into sight. Up tempo and bombastic ‘Back To The Grind’ is addictive and infectious. Chugging guitars and galloping rhythms, ‘Back To The Grind’ is a crowd rouser.
Mid temp melodic hard rock and ‘Get Out’ chugs away endlessly with cracking guitars and a relentless rhythm. Best song on the album is the Van Halen tinged ‘On Top Of The World’. It is catchy, infectious and so addictive you may think you have heard it before…but no, it is a Vandallus composition. The chorus is sing a long and will have fans chanting it at the tops of their voices. Buzzsaw style guitars and the album is brought to a close by ‘A Fool You’re Right’. This debut album shows a lot of promise for the future of Vandallus with its hard hitting brand of infectious hard rock.
Overall, sharp edged, hard hitting, hard rock with hints of the Scorpions and Van Halen.
