“NEW GODS”
Album Review by Stacey Fawcett

10/10

Cauldron are a Canadian band who formed in 2006, ‘New Gods’ is their latest album. Cauldron are a band that have always been on the radar. This album shows why they deserve to stay there.

Opening the album is ‘Prisoner Of The Past’ which grooves along nicely, before the slightly double tracked vocals emerge. The balance on this track tonally is brilliant. This track sounds like something from the 80’s which I personally really like. What a start to an album! Now we have ‘Letting Go’ which has some of the chunkiest bass I have heard in a while, just beautiful. However, I cannot ignore the exquisite guitar work I have heard so far, it’s not often I feel it so much on a first listen. But man am I feeling this album.

Similarly, to the first couple of tracks ‘No Longer’ is slow for a metal song but is delivered with so much passion. I can hear so many influences in this album so far, all of which I also like for example Iron Maiden and Blue Oyster Cult. This is an album of NWOBHM, but in 2018. It’s what young NWOBHM fans such as myself crave. ‘Save The Truth – Syracuse’ comes storming in with pounding drums, which later introduce a double bass drum pedal to the mix (this is exciting) the album is very minimalist but this is its charm. ‘Never Be Found’ is heavy, with juicy twin guitar harmonies that I would bathe in, if it was physically possible.

‘Drown’ is a mid temp doom like track until – bam. Here it comes, you better get your horns in the air! Such a headbanger. ‘Together As None’ is possibly my favourite track so far, it’s progressive, it has some serious riffage and expert solo work. Ah, I love this album! Unfortunately, I only have two more tracks left to review, here goes.

‘Isolation’ is dark and sombre, a pure instrumental excitement. Then finally we have ‘Last Request’ which is just incredible, there’s nothing much more I can write which isn’t just repetition about how good this band seriously are.

Everybody who likes NWOBHM must buy this album and catch a gig. I will not settle for less.
