SCHWARZER ENGEL Album Review: “Sieben”

SCHWARZER ENGEL
“Sieben”
Album Review by Piers Renfree

8/10

Formed in 2007, Schwarzer Engel are a Gothic/dark metal band who hail from Stuttgart, Germany.

Currently consisting of Dave Jason (vocals, guitar, synthesizer and orchestral production), Vincent Hübsch (guitar), Bert Oeler (bass guitar) & Tino Calmbach (drums). “Sieben” is the band’s seventh album to date, following “Apokalypse” (2010), “Träume einer Nacht” (2011), “In brennenden Himmeln” (2013), “Imperium I” (2015), “Imperium II” (2016) and “Kult der Krähe” (2018).

Like Rammstein, Schwarzer Engel sing in their native language and it suits their music. Dave Jason’s vocals are very reminiscent of Till Lindemann. Schwarzer Engel also use heavy, industrial, riffs in their music, but they also have more melodic keyboards at times.

The eleven songs here go on for just under forty-three minutes. The production is crisp and clear, and my only real quibble is that some of the songs could have gone on a little bit longer. Rammstein is the biggest reference point here, but fans of Static-X, Marilyn Manson and Fear Factory will find something here for them as well.
